Women in Business

Deborah Nappi, Sax, LLP An active member in Sax’s Professional Organization of Women for Empowerment &Results

hat is your current position? Director. Howdo youman- age the work/life balance? I am the mother of three chil- dren, and I always make a concerted effort to be present and in the moment while both at the office and while at home with my family. Sax LLP puts an emphasis on work/life bal- ance within our firm and grants me the flexibility to make both my career and personal life a priority. I make a conscious ef- fort to attend all activities my children are involved in, and I manage my workload around their needs. I am also very se- lective in the Committees I join W

which drives me to address their needs effectively, and reach their desired outcome. I also feel I have an inherent ability to connect with my cli- ents on a personal level, and when I couple that with my industry expertise, I am able to assist themwith the various aspects of their business while being considered their trusted advisor. Do you feel being awoman is an advantage, disadvan- tage or no advantage in today’s business world? Why? Why not? I fully em- brace being a woman in today’s business world, and believe we have full advantage. As women,

we bring unique qualities and characteristics to our business relationships with our clients, our referral sources, and our colleagues. Our temperament, our work ethic, and our ability to multi-task powers us with the ability to maintain a work/ life balance while pursuing our professional goals. Many organizations now have women’s groups to help women in the various phases of their careers. I am a very active member in Sax’s Profes- sional Organization of Women for Empowerment and Results (P.O.W.E.R.) which seeks to empower women and collec- tively redefine our roles in the business environment. I believe a supportive network like this within a company is necessary to bring professional women to- gether for career development and community outreach, and to ensure we have the tools to excel. Tell us a little about your family. I am blessed with three amazing children: Christina, Robert and Andrew. Christina is pursuing a career as a social worker and is in her senior year at the University of Scranton; Robert is studying business as a sophomore at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington; and Andrew is a junior in high school in the beginning phases of the college search. Who do you feel was most influential in your life when choosing this profession? I was fortunate to have an uncle who was truly instrumental in not only directing me in a career path, but also in becom- ing the person I am today. He was a realtor who struggled in residential real estate during an economic downturn but con- tinued in the struggle and did so with humility and grace. He provided me with the example of resiliency and perseverance during difficulty which has been a great gift during some challenging times in my own life. What outside activities do you enjoy during you free time? I am currently on the Board of The Gloria Foun- dation, which brings aware- ness and advocacy to domestic violence and its victims. I am passionate about the cause and give much of my time and resources to assist the Foun- dations efforts, in addition to offering my support to other or- ganizations that assist victims of domestic violence. 
