Healthy: Fall 2022

IGNITE YOUR COMMUNITY SPIRIT – VOLUNTEER

Volunteering is more than a “nice” gesture. It’s a healthy habit that it is a hallmark of Dublin’s character. We value the thousands of volunteers who come to our assistance and make an impact every day. Most of all, we look forward to hearing about project ideas and talents of our community members and partners. Opportunities range from helping at one-time events, to serving in numerous ambassador roles throughout the community, or offering your assistance to a senior citizen in need and more. To learn, serve and engage, visit DublinOhioUSA. gov/volunteer to learn more about the various opportunities with the City, and to learn how you, your family, friends or corporate team can reach out and make a difference.

SYNTERO’S NEW GROUPS AND RESOURCES ADDRESS THE CHANGING NEEDS OF A DIVERSE POPULATION

The beginning of the school year is a great time for parents and guardians to chat with young people regarding their feelings about returning to

school and their intentions for the school year; however, it can be difficult to get children, adolescents and teens to share their feelings. Open communication with young people takes work — especially as they begin to build relationships outside of the home and deal with more complex issues, such as processing information in the news and managing stressors. “One of the biggest, most important pieces [of communication] is that young people feel comfortable coming and talking to us and letting us know what they’re thinking,” Syntero’s Director of Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives for Franklin County Susan Ortega says. “They just need to know that you’re a safe outlet… It starts early and often. If we are actively listening to the small things, they’re going to be more likely to come to us for the big things.” When speaking with young people, the goal is to keep the lines of communication open. Try the following examples to engage or respond to the young people in your life to help them feel comfortable coming to you for all issues in their lives — big and small: • “What do you think?” • “That’s a good question.” • “I don’t know, but I’ll find out.” • “Do you know what that word means?” • “I’m glad you told me about that.” • “I want to understand how you feel about…” For more information on how parents, guardians and caregivers can support young people by building communication skills and strengthening resiliency, visit Syntero.org/Resources-Youth-Mental- Health. Resources to help young people cope with grief and loss are also available.

Virtual Workshop Series Syntero’s School-Based Team will offer a virtual workshop series for parents and guardians during the 2022-2023 school year that will address topics, such as general mental health, practical strategies for supporting students with anxiety, setting boundaries and limits with children/teens, and how to talk with kids about traumatic events.
