CARICOM AT 50
On the occasion of the 50 th Anniversary of CARICOM on July 4, 2023, Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Hilary Beckles issued a statement of congratulations on behalf of The UWI. The theme of the celebration was “Fifty Years Strong: A Solid Foundation to Build On”, which he said was most appropriate. He lauded CARICOM’s growth to maturity over the years and enumerated some of its accomplishments, such as climate change advocacy, coordination of external trade negotiations, disaster management, education, health cooperation, marine
biodiversity advocacy, and private sector collaboration. He acknowledged the role the University continues to play in supporting CARICOM goals, and paid tribute to those who have worked so hard, including Secretaries-General, heads of government and other government officials, heads and staff of all regional institutions, and all the people the University serves collectively. He ended by pledging The UWI’s continued commitment to supporting its fellow regional institution in achieving its strategic objectives and goals and ultimately, a shared vision of propelling Caribbean development.
