The UWI Vice-Chancellor’s Report to University Council

HONOURS AND SPECIAL EVENTS

AFUWI

Post-pandemic, the American Foundation for The UWI (the AFUWI) experienced several challenges in meeting its strategic objectives. Its reliable donor segment suffered financial setbacks and were less able to donate as they usually did. The negative impact on the foundation’s fundraising targets was also exacerbated by the fact that most beneficiaries are outside the US and were therefore ineligible for US government-funded programmes.

To honour its commitments to talented but needy students, the AFUWI pivoted to new avenues, including entering new markets to attract donors. Several events were held, including the Summer Soiree and a symposium titled “Great Minds are Made in the Caribbean” to mark and celebrate Caribbean American Heritage Month in June 2023. An AFWUI team visited the Mona Campus in October 2022 to meet with key UWI members. The Board also presented cheques to The UWI for US$175,000 and US$25,000.
