The Alleynian 712 2024

The quality of cricket on show was excellent, and the boys aimed to harness what they had witnessed in their remaining games. Sunday was another day of adventure as ‘clothless’ Table Mountain beckoned. A quick cable-car journey enabled us to enjoy fantastic views of the South African scenery before heading to the next training session. The weekend’s enrichment activities, coupled with a morning visit to the Cheetah Sanctuary, courtesy of the Friends of Dulwich’s kind donation, provided the stimu- lus needed to kick-start the week’s cricket. An excellent victory at Fairmont High School and a narrow loss to Par- el Vallei showed clear signs of progress with Josh Magu- ire and Ben Leveton starring. Tuesday, however, saw a humbling loss against Parel Vallei and a thrilling 1-wicket loss to Fish Hoek. However, the highlight of the day was our morning visit to Langa Township, the oldest township in Cape Town. After an insightful tour, our pupils donat- ed food to a local orphanage and their own clothing and

sport equipment to a local primary school. The boys did the College proud as they coached four different sports activities to over 120 pupils – an experience that won’t be forgotten. Our final games of cricket took place on the Wednes- day. Dulwich set 195 to win against Stand High School at Western Province Cricket Club, assisted by Alfie Veysey and Shreesh Mehrotra’s ninth wicket partnership, which included many shots inspired by Saturday night’s T20 experience. However, this proved not to be enough as the Stand chased the total down with three wickets to spare. At Stellenbosch High School, the South African side were too strong despite Nick Black’s bowling efforts. The last day of our action-packed trip included a visit to Boulder’s Beach and the penguins, as well as a final tour meal where awards and thanks were presented and shared before we returned to the UK, all the richer from an epic week away. ◉
