NEW SOCIETIES AI SOCIETY MICHAEL MASLOWSKI (YEAR 12)
AI Society started with an introduction to the field of AI in both theory (Lecture) and practice (Labs). During the Lecture section, students learned what ‘artificial intelli- gence’ really means, as well as its subsections such as machine learning or deep learning. In this way, members started to build up their theoretical understanding in order to gain a fuller picture of the subject. During the Lab section, students had an opportunity to gain hands- on experience in machine learning. Using Kaggle, a well- known website for machine learning and data science, members could start their journey with AI programming by learning how to solve exercises at their current level. ◉ ASTROSOC MATIJA BABIC (YEAR 13) Shifat Matbbar (Year 13), Marco Wong (Year 13) and I decided to set up AstroSoc as a passion project in order to share our enjoyment of astronomy with other students. During the year, we had several outstanding presenta- tions, ranging from the history of data in astronomy and neutron stars to asteroid mining. Some members also attended the excellent astrobiology talk given by Profes- sor Lewis Dartnell, organized by the Biology Society. In addition to these in-person events, we also enjoyed online ones, such as the Psyche mission launch by NASA and the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition, held every year, where members tested their knowledge of astronomy, with the chance of winning some amazing prizes. Overall, the society had a successful first year, and I would like to thank Mr Minter for helping out and supervising. ◉ DULWICH COLLEGE REMOTE CONTROL SOCIETY EDDIE WESSON (YEAR 12) DCRC’s inaugural year has been a soaring success, the highlight being our successful construction of a 3D- printed plane. Although nimble, the plane was a tad hard to control, but nothing our skilled pilot Morgan couldn’t handle! The society’s weekly Friday meetings have been a
hub for innovation, consistently drawing over 10 members per week. Each session brings something new, whether we focus on building and planning or enjoy an engaging talk from one of our members. Our flight day was in- credibly rewarding and enjoyable, and we have already started work on a car/plane hybrid RC vehicle, alongside tentative plans for an FPV quadcopter. I’d like to thank Mr Vaughan and Mr Mair for making the society possible and for helping DCRC to serve as a place for all RC enthusi- asts (and soon-to-be enthusiasts!) to delve further into their hobby. ◉ FINANCE SOCIETY NIKHIL SHIRGAOKAR (YEAR 13) The Finance Society had an impressive start this school year, quickly growing to 150 members under the leadership of founders Nikhil Shirgaokar, Dale Chan
