Walking Tour: Jewish Harlem Before Harlem became the epicenter of the African American experience, it was the Jewish immigrant neighborhood, home to over 175,000 Jews at the turn of the twentieth century. See synagogues, theaters, department stores, and other venues that were built by Jews for Jews, and that now function as part of the landscape of today's Harlem. Learn about the role that key Harlem Renaissance sites in how the Jewish "Great White Way" led to the Civil Rights movement and explore parallels between the Jewish and African American communities. Walking Tour: Harlem Renaissance From the cultural epicenter of 135th Street, explore historic landmarks, important community institutions, Striver's Row, great examples of nineteenth and early twentieth century architecture, and more through discussion of the people and places that made Harlem an epicenter of creativity and activism. For an enhanced experience, pair this with both the museum preview ( Course 12462 ) and the walking tours (Courses 12418 and 12461 ) of the Met's exhibit, The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism , also in the catalog (separate registration required). Gilded Age Supermodels and Influencers
Like today, the public at the time of the Gilded Age consumed with fervor the gossip and images of the beautiful women of the time, many of whom were immortalized in New York City statues created by the era's preeminent sculptors. Through vintage images of these stunners, examine the alluring “professional beauties” who served as fodder for the press and grist for readers across the country and the world. Learn about the scandals of Evelyn Nesbit and Virginia Gateau, the tragic life of Black model Hettie Anderson who was immortalized by artist Augustus St. Gaudens, and the woman who inspired Charles Dana Gibson’s Gibson Girl. GINNY POLEMAN is a graduate of Cornell University, a trained docent for the Municipal Art Society’s official Grand Central Terminal tour, as well as a trained educational guide for 4th through 12th graders at Manhattan’s largest art museum. Participants in this class will probe the concepts of a single truth versus the potential for multiple truths in a given situation. The goal is to think more critically, be open to others, be aware of bias and misperception and how they impact our thinking. TAMAR (TAMI) ARNOWITZ has a BA from Wellesley College and an MBA from Columbia Business School. She has also studied at Hebrew University and the Conservative Yeshiva and is a certified life coach.
