Residents and Beachwood Community Services Patrons, I’m aware that each seasonal recreation department catalog generates excitement in the community, and this one certainly delivers with new opportunities that can expand your mind and stretch your fitness level. Before I explore some of what lies ahead, I am happy to report success with a previously sponsored activity. Our “Mind Challenge” team placed 4th overall in this trivia game competition which held its 2023 semifinals in May in Middleburg Heights. Team members are Les Snider, Rory Sanders, Fred Valins, Linda Waldman, Rick Fishman, Steve Brofman and Chad Cohen, with Susan Gordon Merdler managing the program. This trivia tournament was created to enhance senior socialization and encourage those at senior centers across Northeast Ohio to exercise their minds. More than 75 teams from over 40 cities competed. You can get involved in the spring for the next competition or try our new monthly trivia challenge this fall. Even with the arrival of fall, our temporary pickleball courts continue to be available while our six new courts are under construction. We now have a certified professional pickleball instructor hosting two instructional programs this fall, be sure to sign up. For those who wish to become more tech oriented, we have three free classes on Mondays in October at 11 a.m. including Tech Zoo (Oct. 2), Gateway to Virtual Independence (Oct. 9) and Unlocking the Potential of Artificial Intelligence (Oct. 16). Looking back to this past season, we are extremely pleased with the success of our Juneteenth event which involved a collaboration with the Beachwood School’s African American Affinity Group. We invite you to check out the Beachwood Arts Council’s new Free Little Art Gallery, located outside the Community Center’s side entrance. You can take a piece of art, share a piece of art and ultimately enjoy art just by checking out what’s on display. Finally, our marque event, the 6th annual Fall Festival presented by Crestmont, is scheduled for October 22 with all the inflatables, games and activities that you love. This year’s kickoff concert on October 21 will feature “Simply Queen,” a nationally touring Queen tribute band from Ontario, Canada. The concert is free and begins at 7:30 PM. We’ll have food trucks, beer, wine and beverages on hand. We hope you share our thrill in providing you with all of the wonderful options on the pages ahead. Let us know what you think, too! We appreciate your feedback. Email us at recreation@beachwoodohio.com.
