picturesque, studies in nature, comedy and, of course, the Classics. Neither the weather nor the boys’ enthusi- asm could have been bettered and we all returned home with a richer understanding of the daily lives of Romans, what constitutes a pyroclastic flow and the dangers of wearing a Juventus shirt in Napoli. French Trip - Paris November 2022 • Robert Baylis A group of 19 pupils from Year 12 visited Paris over the October half-term. The highlights of the trip included a behind-the-scenes tour of the Stade de France where many of the 2023 Rugby World Cup games will be held, a tour of the Quartier Latin, including an impromptu football match with pupils from a local collège in the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre, and a subterranean visit to the Cat- acombs – a fascinating visit kindly funded by a grant from the Friends of Dulwich College. Pupils stayed with Parisian host families in central Par- is and enjoyed 15 hours of French tuition at Accord Langues, a short walk from the Eiffel Tower. Additional

activities included a visit to the Musée du Quai Branly, a tour of Paris by bateau mouche , discovering the areas around St Michel-École Militaire and the Champs Elysées, a tour of Montmartre and a trip up the Eiffel Tower, with a descent from the second floor on foot for all! German Trip – Aachen Christmas Markets December 2022 • James Poynton At the end of a busy Michaelmas term, Year 8 students took the Eurostar from St Pancras all the way to the city of Aachen on the border with Belgium, where they visited the German Christmas markets and practised their German skills, whilst doing some Christmas shopping on the way. There was some excellent German spoken, with many students asking for ‘einmal Pommes, bitte ’ and try- ing some of the local specialities, including Kinder- punsch and Aachener Printen . Students also took part in a range of fun and informative cultural activities, including a German film screening, a town treasure hunt and a visit to Aachen Cathedral – home to Charlemagne’s tomb and site of the coronation of 30 German Kaisers.

Spanish Trip - Valencia November 2022 • Ben Wood

Forty students from Years 10 and 11 returned from an October half-term trip to the beautiful Mediterranean city of Valencia with their cultural appetites sated, their stom- achs full of paella, and their legs tired from all the walking in the late summer sun. As one of the first overseas trips since 2019, the Middle School Spanish expedition had high expectations to meet, but armed with negative PCR tests and packed suitcas- es, the pupils dived in to the activities after landing in 27°C heat on the first Saturday of the half-term break. Highlights of the trip included: the awe-inspiring con- temporary architecture of the City of Arts and Sciences, located at the mouth of the city parks formed from the old riverbed of the diverted River Turia; the urban art tour in the edgy neighbourhood of El Cabanyal, and the chance to get hands-on in the workshop afterwards; and a sun-drenched bicycle tour to the nearby beaches. With the relationship between Dulwich College and Taronja language school being over a decade old, we are already looking forward to next year’s trip. Art Trip - Berlin November 2022 • Sue Mulholland Putting the heart back in Art with our first overseas residential trip since the pandemic were our Upper School artists and art historians, who ‘lived’ the culture of the vibrant city of Berlin, from the Banana bunker to the Bourgeois retrospective. The first day was one of travel and visits to central land- marks, including the Brandenburg Gate and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. The following day, the Hamburger Bahnhof allowed for a forensic exploration of division, with the group studying Cameron Clayborn’s first solo exhibition in Europe. Next up was an opportunity to interrogate Dierk Schmidt’s confrontation of mapped

tableaux dissecting the legal synopsis of the Berlin Africa Conference, in which he explores colonialism and its consequences. The final day saw a visit to the Boros Collection, which is housed in the Nazi bunker, a symbol of superiority and power and one of the most controversial buildings still in existence in Germany today. KINDL – Berlin’s Centre for Contemporary Art – presented a new challenge with the exhibition ‘No Simple Way Out’, a series of obstructed spaces with hidden narratives. Lastly, the group visited the Martin-Gropius-Bau, where the pupils examined the themes of care, repair and healing, a fitting conclusion to the trip and a positive focus for the group’s return. Classics Trip - Naples November 2022 • Fran Cooke A very early start did nothing to dampen the spirits of the 30 Year 8 and 9 pupils who joined Miss Cooke, Mrs Greenbury, Mr Croucher and Mr Stanley for a jour- ney back in time to visit the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and tread in the footsteps of the Emperor Nero at his sprawling villa at Oplontis during October half-term. They ascended Mount Vesuvius and peered into its smoking crater, visited the house of our dear Caecilius and wondered at the stunning mosaics and frescoes housed in the Archaeological Museum of Naples. In the evenings, as well as sampling many of Naples’ famous margherita pizzas the boys also tried their hand at mak- ing some themselves. The quiz night was fiercely com- petitive, second only perhaps to the daily photography competition, which featured rounds that rewarded the

Classics Trip - Hamburg December 2022 • Ellie Greenbury In December, nine Upper School students of classical subjects were lucky enough to go on a short trip to Ham- burg to see an exhibition about depictions of the Roman Emperor Augustus.
