The best motto is not to waste things Sir David Attenborough

and to spark debate about the impact of humans on the planet – ‘what would you do with this plastic bottle?’ The week ended with a trilogy of talks that did not shy away from hard truths. Klaus Mitchell OA joined us to discuss ‘The Missing Link to Reach Net Zero’, which ad- dressed the elephant in the room – the politically unsa- voury fact that we each have an individual responsibility to recognise and address climate change. MFL Society discussed Latin America’s troublesome relationship with the natural environment, and the Art and African and Car- ibbean societies looked at why ‘Art is Rubbish’, discussing East African grassroots sustainable enterprises such as the Kakuma Collection arts project and Ocean Sole, who make bespoke crafts from discarded flip flops. East Africa is on the brink of famine because of climate change and conflict. Why, they asked, is it that those least to blame face the harshest consequences yet appear to be doing the most to turn the tide of destruction? DUCKS and Junior School were Eco Superheroes all week, and beyond. They upcycled, completed the weigh- ing challenge, recycled, reduced and reclaimed materials to make bespoke arts and crafts. They designed and became Eco Superheroes and have assured us they will save the planet. As well as the plethora of talks, actions and events, and despite adverse weather, we had the ever-popular bike repair shop, with even more of us promising to commute on two – not four – wheels. Saving the planet is not just a job for DUCKS and Junior School, or indeed only during Eco Week, but it was an opportunity for us to reflect and align ourselves ‘in military style’ and follow Major Beard’s good advice to begin by: Understanding ourselves Communicating Shifting the culture (even more) Collaborating Investing in green education …and wasting less – keep handing in empty plates at lunchtime and let’s reduce that one tonne by Christmas! ◎

Year 9 began their week with a talk from climate change expert and founder of Target4Green Peter Milne, and then spent the day in English creating dystopian collages and written pieces. Their terrifyingly real and surreal stories explore ‘what if’ we don’t make the necessary changes and advances
