Politics Society Mr Mackintosh

Newly founded this year, Mahjong Society has taught boys across the College how to play. Hong Kong music and snacks always accompany the competitive play!

Warhammer Society has had a great year, playing our first match against another school and becoming part of the official Warhammer Alliance network of schools. Boys from the

Relocated to the inspirational setting of the Masters’ Library, LitSoc 2022/23 has seen solo speakers, student co-presentations and four-way teacher panels consider all aspects of the not-just-written word from urban grime to art deco, lyric to epic, realist to surrealist, provincial to cosmopolitan, stretching across Dublin, Glasgow, Tokyo and the American Midwest.

Politics Society had a strong year of internal debates and visits from a range of speakers, such as the MPs William Wragg and Shailesh Vara. Many thanks to the pupils who gave excellent presentations – ranging from the politics of Ghana to the 2011 London riots. We thank the departing co-presidents, Joss Titcomb and Eddie Irving (both Year 13), and look forward to seeing them and other PolSoc leavers soon in Westminster’s corridors of power! Model United Nations Mr Mackintosh Conferences: 4. Active delegates: 20. Scottish dances: 1. Luxurious hotels: 0. Prizes: multiple. Security Council vetoes used by Max: more than the chairs liked. Men- tions of the word ‘realpolitik’: countless. World peace achieved: unlikely. Congratulations due to delegates for a successful season: many. Maths Enrichment Mr Mowll In February, 64 students from the Dulwich Middle School took part in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. The hour-long competition consists of a series of in- creasingly brain-bending mathematical problems which students must solve under intense time pressure. After a nervy wait for the results, we were delighted to find out that an impressive 29 pupils produced outstanding performances that qualified them for one of the follow-on round competitions, including the Olympiads. Egor Cher- nyshov (11S) scored a near perfect 130 marks, earning him the best-in-school certificate prize. ◎

Middle and Upper Schools have also visited the Low- er School club to help them with their kit-building and painting skills. ChemSoc Miss Boycott This year, our Year 12 chemists have been taking the lead for ChemSoc by designing and delivering practicals to the Middle School students. Highlights have included ses- sions on bioluminescence, using chemical tests to solve chemical mysteries, and using the iodine clock reaction to control time. Dr Avshu also made his annual appearance to show the students how to turn test tubes into silver.

Dilettantes Society Mr Weaver

The Dilettantes convene on Monday lunchtimes in the Archives Office above the Wodehouse Library. At these sessions, we explore the 6,000 antiquarian books and artefacts in the collections put together over 250 years by the teaching Fellows of the Old College, which in- clude Roman sculpture, metalwork, and glass from Col- lege archaeological digs in the City. Each of the centu- ries-old objects we look at tells its own story. A typical session might include a couple of printed books from the Civil War, a medieval manuscript and an Elizabethan spoon mud-larked from the Thames. All students are welcome to come along!

Board Games Society Mr Gibbons

Board Games Society runs Thursday after-school ses- sions from 4pm. Our members have enjoyed a range of games, from the competitive gem extravaganza Splendor, to the sly deception and detective work of The Resist- ance: Avalon and the harsh co-operative campaign to eradicate disease in Pandemic, among many others. We run from the comfort of boarding houses – Week A in Or- chard/Old Blew common room and Week B in Ivyholme TV room. We welcome any new members and games.
