Ocean at the End of the Lane Zachy Fleming’s (Year 10) theatrical ambition clearly knows no bounds and he steered an epic Ocean at the End of the Lane for Drake. Not only was there tender performance work from Zachy and Dylan Zaraspe (Year 9) as Boy and Lettie Hempstock, but there was also a great cameo from Calvin Chen (Year 9) as the timeless Mrs Hempstock and a stunning ‘murderous flea’ puppet constructed to bring the eldritch magic of childhood and the ‘rip in forever’ to life. It was breathtaking stuff, and Zachy and Rufus (Marlowe) were jointly awarded the best Director Cup for tackling their material with real clarity of vision. The Breakfast Club Marlowe took on my favourite film, The Breakfast Club , and adapted it for the stage. Prior to this performance I was curious as to how the essence of this film could be captured in a 10-minute piece, and Rufus Angel (Year 11) showed me how it could be excellently adapted. Seeing great acting of many iconic scenes really did the film justice while also making the narrative their own, and there was some excellent staging and great use of the gauze as the pupils ran rings around Will Bradley’s hapless Mr Vernon. Das Rheingold I was absolutely blown away by the massive ambition of Raleigh who tackled Das Rheingold with live orchestral music and Game of Thrones- style Norse gods to im- pressive effect. Henry Armstrong (Year 11) deserved my special adjudicator’s award for the scale and scope of Raleigh’s contribution, supported admirably by Saverio Jones (Year 11), Kit Harland (Year 11) and Luke Honey- sett (Year 11) as Odin, Froh and Loki. The Mason Cup for Contribution to Drama throughout their time in the Middle School was jointly awarded to Toby Polli (Jonson) and Will Bradley (Marlowe). Truly it was a great sight to see the next generation of thespians overflowing with potential. The Drama Depart- ment have outdone themselves in fostering the talent of these students. ◎
