THE ALLEYNIAN 710

Ciara O’Loughnane CYRUS NAYERI Ciara joined the Geography Department in September 2019. Since then, she has thrown herself into almost every part of College life, taking a lead in many aspects of the running of the department, as well as in the co-curricular and pastoral life of the school. Ciara’s energy and enthusiasm for her subject characterise her approach to teaching. She has a firm belief in motivating students to think about how they can make a difference to environmental issues, and sees teaching as a craft. She has made significant contributions to departmental resources as well as to the organisation of trips and societies. Indeed, she started a new Lower School club, GeoExplorers, and leads GeogSoc. She has been an invaluable colleague and a first-rate champion of her subject. Ciara believes wholeheartedly in the importance of a holistic education, and genuinely enjoys the time she can spend with pupils outside of the classroom environment. She has been a committed member of the CCF team and has been involved in skiing. As the Middle School Jonson Housemaster, she has helped to organise many successful House competitions. She has also been involved in the Yelcho Room, and is a strong advocate for mental health and wellbeing. Ciara has made extensive contributions to the lives of the boarders at Dulwich. As a visiting boarding tutor, she is credited with starting the annual tradition of ‘Boarding Bake Off’ and has made a significant positive difference to pastoral life at Dulwich, both as a form tutor to a Year 10 and 11 form and in the boarding house.

James Flanagan

RACHEL MCILWAINE

When James joined Dulwich College Chemistry Department in 2019, little did we know that he would be leading the department through the most tumultuous times in recent history. Not that the pandemic fazed James: with his fastidious eye for detail, love of Chemistry and dry sense of humour, he was able to lead the team through turbulent times, while maintaining exceptionally high levels of academic rigour. Affectionately known as our very own Sean Dyche, James has stewarded the Chemistry department from strength to strength – more pupils are now applying to study the subject at university; the supra- curricular provision is amongst the best in the College; and the Chemistry sharepoint site is world-leading. His love of Chemistry is palpable, and you only need to mention polymerisation or selective aerobic alcohol oxidation to set him off talking about molecular orbital theory, symmetry sets, 2D NMR and probably some quantum chemistry thrown in for good luck. Beyond the incredible work he has done within the department, James has been a valued Upper School form tutor and a resident tutor at Ivyholme, where he has helped the pupils feel at home and has shared his love of academic work. His tutees are grateful for the time and effort he has put into their UCAS applications, drawing on his expertise from Brighton College where he was Deputy Head of Sixth Form, and they will miss his calm manner and Nintendo. James leaves us to become Assistant Head, Learning and Teaching, at Hampton School, where he will undoubtedly be as valued a member of their community as he has been of ours.

We wish Ciara the very best as she moves to become teacher of Geography at North London Collegiate School in Singapore.
