Issue 1. Spring 2022

The clocks have gone forward and spring is in the air…and we're starting to feel that the confidence is beginning to return to the leisure industry. We've got lots of exciting news including information on our new Travel Insurance policy, top tips to preparing your caravan for the new season and how we rose to the challenge when Storm Eunice and Franklin swept in and caused destruction. Welcome to the latest Compass news

Pesky Vermin Rats and mice like the warmth of a caravan during the winter months and sometimes find their way in. If they do, they can cause significant damage so check for the signs and make sure to contact your Park and insurer. If you’re insured with Compass then any Vermin damage is covered, unfortunately not all insurance products cover this damage and it can be an expensive discovery. Power Up You’ll need to reconnect your caravan to the mains utilities (gas, water, electricity etc) and check that everything is working properly. After the water has been reconnected, run all the taps to check the pipes for any leaks or cracks and to ensure the water supply is flowing. The best way to check the gas is to run the hot water or test the cooker (if you have a gas powered one). If you do experience any issues then it’s best to contact a certified gas engineer who can do a full inspection ready for the new season. Your Park may offer a reconnection service, as they may have drained down and disconnected for you at the end of last season. In our experience these services are well

Preparing your Caravan for the Season

Like many holiday caravan and lodge owners you probably can’t wait to get back to your home fromhome and enjoy a well earned break after the winter months. As your caravan is likely to have been unoccupied and out of use for a number of weeks or months it’s really important to make sure everything is working properly and fully operational for the season ahead. We’ve put together a few handy hints and tips to help you do this. Check, Check and Check Again The first thing to do when you get to your caravan, is to do a thorough visual check inside and outside. This should include the roof, guttering, window seals and seams, any skylights, the door and underneath the caravan. You’re looking for any obvious signs of damage that could have occurred over the winter or problems such as cracks and damp. Also check all your utilities, pipework and connection for any signs of frost damage, or for mould or dampness that can occur in the colder months of the year.

worth utilising. Spring Clean

It’s always a good idea to give your caravan a thorough clean both inside and out. This will make sure that everything inside is fresh and clean and free fromdust or cobwebs and that the exterior is sparkling with guttering free from leaves and debris.

Weathering the Storm

Storms Eunice and Franklin hit theUKback in February 2022, causingmajor devastation and destruction to thousands of caravanowners. Fromroof’sbeingblownoff, trees fallingontoand throughcaravansandevencaravans themselves being flipped over and blown by the wind. The impact was wide ranging and the clean-up costs will run into millions of pounds. At the time of writing, we’re supporting parks and individual customers through losses which will eventually run into the millions (a combination of major losses and minor damage). This is where insurance can really come into its own and at Compass we pride ourselves on both our service and speed of response. While no one buys cover hoping they will need it, the real ‘moment of truth’ comes when you need to rely on your insurer. Within hours of the storms, and indeed in the days between Eunice and Franklin, we had boots on the ground and were actively helping customers. To date, we’ve helped and supported nearly 100 individual customers and settled our first claim just days after the storms hit. There’s still some way to go and the clean-up and recovery will take time but the initial response has been well received.

Have You Checked Your Sums Insured Recently?

One of the most important parts of your policy are the amounts you have insured your structure and contents for. The cost of new caravans is rising sharply at the moment, due to higher demand and restrictions on supply andmanufacture from Covid19, Brexit and other economic factors. We’ve seen price increases of over 10% in just the last 6 months and so it’s never been more important to make sure you’re insured for the right amount. If you’re not sure how to check this you can look online at similar makes and models or ones for sale on your Park, the best thing to do is ask your Park themselves what a replacement for your caravan would cost. You may have taken the opportunity to invest in some new decking over the winter, some new skirting, or invested in some new things for your caravan, whether that’s the latest 4K television, new bedding or even a fancy new coffee machine. If you have, then you’ll need to check, and possibly increase, your sums insured. If all this seems far too complicated, we’ve developed a handy guide and calculator to assist you, available online:
