LEGAL AFFAIRS

OPEN RECORDS REQUESTS Formal requests made by individuals or entities to obtain access to public records and information held by the Sheriff's Office. These requests are made under the principles of transparency and accountability, allowing citizens to access documents, data, and other records related to law enforcement activities, policies, and procedures.

The HCSO Office of Legal Affairs (LA) plays a pivotal role in providing counsel to command and executive staff on various legal matters, such as drafting and solidifying agreements, contracts, and other legal documents. Additionally, LA ensures clarity in legal communication throughout the agency and actively engages in communication, negotiation, and management of complex legal matters with external partners to support the success of our signature programs. A notable aspect of LA’s responsibilities includes handling the surge in Open Records Act (ORA) requests in recent years, particularly those stemming from inmates seeking records under the ORA. This underscores the agency’s commitment to transparency and responsiveness in fulfilling legal obligations while maintaining a positive public presence to foster commUNITY trust.
