Scarsdale Adult School Catalog Winter 2024

Modern British Short Stories Explore some of the great twentieth century short stories by celebrated British authors. Each week's discussion will be devoted to the discussion of plot, subplot, characters, and writing style of different works from The Penguin Book of Modern British Short Stories , Malcolm Bradbury, ed. (Penguin Books 1989). Some of the selections will be traditional and familiar while others will be innovative and more challenging, but all will make for rich, compelling reading. Authors likely to be included are Graham Greene, Salman Rushdie, Julian Barnes, and Muriel Spark, among others. Students are encouraged to read the material once for story and a second time for insight. Discussion prompts for analyzing the readings and shaping the class discussion will be emailed in advance. Before the first session, please read "The Lotus" by Jean Rhys and "Miss Pulkinhorn" by William Golding. MARILYN DeRIGHT is an adjunct professor of English at Iona College, and has taught literature, film, and drama for SAS for many years. 6 Sessions, starting Monday, January 22 (no class 2/19) • 1:00pm-3:00pm • Online • Course 12257 • $180
