New Beginnings Writing Workshop Whether to fulfill a new year’s resolution to finally start that story or memoir you have been meaning to write or to jump-start something already begun, this class offers the focus and support you need. Seasoned writers and beginners alike receive guidance on how to channel memories, experiences, and feelings into clear and powerful narratives. Students are offered weekly (optional) prompts for inspiration as well as advice on craft and technique to help shape your writing so that it conveys exactly what you want it to say. Feedback will be offered in a safe and encouraging workshop environment. Class size is limited to ensure individualized attention. AMY RALSTON SEIFE is a published poet and short story writer whose work has been nominated for the Best of the Net Anthology and Pushcart Prizes. Personal Essay Writing: A Way to Make Meaning of Your Life
According to Socrates, “[t]he unexamined life is not worth living.” This course will help you not only examine your life but also write about it. We all have stories — good ones, funny ones, scary ones and unsettling ones. But what do they mean and what do they tell us about our world? Through writing about your life, recounting it, and analyzing it, you will find the wisdom in it. The personal essay — a form that calls on the author to take small experiences and mine them for the universal truths — is the perfect vehicle to teach us lessons about life. The instructor will prompt your writing exploration, gently supporting and encouraging you to prepare a short essay for each class.
