American Sign Language (ASL) This course is an introduction to the world of
American Sign Language and deaf culture and will provide a basic knowledge of ASL and the deaf community's distinct cultural practices. The course is designed for students who have had little to no previous exposure to ASL. Students will develop a strong
foundation of ASL vocabulary, an understanding of ASL syntax and grammar, and will be introduced to having interactions with the deaf community. Purchase of Signing Naturally: Student Workbook, Units 1-6 is suggested. GIANNA HITTMANN holds a masters degree in the education of the deaf and hard of hearing from Teachers College at Columbia University. She is an elementary school teacher at a school for the deaf where she uses American Sign Language on a daily basis with her students. As a person with hearing loss, she has been using ASL for as long as she can remember and she enjoys working on deaf theater projects in the community. 10 Sessions, starting Tuesday, January 9 Tuesday, January 16 (no class 2/20) • 7:00pm-8:30pm • Scarsdale High School • Course 12352 • $300
American Sign Language IV Continue the study and practice of basic skills learned in the ASL III course. Students should already have knowledge of common vocabulary, and a basic understanding of ASL word order and syntax. Emphasis will be on ASL grammar and on developing receptive and expressive skills. Additionally, students will build upon their knowledge of ASL vocabulary, deaf culture, and deaf history.
