ADDITIONAL INFORMATION & HELPFUL FACTS:

Palm Leaf: A gift from nature made from fallen Areca trees. 100% natural leaves, perfect for the environmentally conscious individual. These products are sturdy, suitable for serving hot, wet and oily dishes. Palm leaf products can even be used for baking in a traditional oven or keeping food chilled in the fridge. Bamboo: Bamboo is very much like wood, but it’s not wood. Technically speaking, it’s a tree- like grass that grows extremely fast, making it among the fastest-growing plants in the world. Known as one of the world’s most important natural substitutes for the endangered rainforest hardwoods; it is a quick growing, versatile, non timber forest profuct whose rate of biomass generation is unsurpassed by any other plants. Birchwood: A birch in a thin-leaved deciduous hardwood tree. Birchwood is a light wood with a very fine grain. It is often used to make cabinets, furniture and cutlery. All Birchwood cutlery supplied to DCS is sourced from manufacturers who are also FSC and PEFC certified. Bagasse: Bagasse is made from the dry fibrous substance which is left behind after sugarcane has been harvested and pressed to extract their juices. Known for being light and sturdy, bagasse packaging can also be used to serve hot, wet oily dishes as well as being microwave and freezer safe. Bagasse products are naturally biodegradable but can also be added to a commercial composting waste stream. PLA (Poly-lactic Acid: Poly-lactic acid (PLA) is a synthetic polymer made from fermented sugars extracted primarily from food crops such as corn, beets or surgarcane. The resulting lactic acid monomer is chemically processed and polymerised, in the presence of a metal catalyst, to form a high molecular weight plastic material. The polymer is very brittle and has a low melt strength leading to difficulty in processing. As a result, most commercial applications sing PLA require rubber or acrylic additive to compensate for the deficiencies. This is way all PLA products need to be processed through a commercial composting waste stream. Paper: A large part of paper is made from wood pulp which is why it is able to biodegrade quite quickly. A huge advantage to using paper is that if it is disposed of correctly then it can be recycled up to 7 times. Products made from board are known to biodegrade within an average of 3 months depending on the environmental conditions. All the paper products sourced by DCS are from manufacturers who carry the FSC AND PEFC sustainability badges.

Food Grade/Food Safe: Food grade means that the material is either safe for human consumption or it is okay to come into direct contact with food products.

Biodegradable An item that can breakdown into natural materials in the environment without causing harm. In terms of environmental benefits; a biodegradable material will break down quickly rather than taking years. It leaves nothing harmful behind and saves landfill space. Compostable Compostable products are all biodegradable, but they are specifically intended for a composting environment. In the right setting, these products break down even more quickly, usually within 90 days, and they leave behind a nutrient-rich organic material called humus, which creates a healthy soil environment for new plant growth. Recyclable A recyclable product can be recovered and made into other items to be reused. In order to recycle a product, none of the previous conditions (for composting or biodegrading) are required. This route follows a much easier process and simply necessitates having the correct bins available and a collection scheme or approved waste management service in place. Made from recycled PET rPET is a recyclable and reusable plastic which can be super-cleaned to create a multi-use, and multi-reuse plastic from both post-consumer waste and post-industrial waste.

Forest Stewardship Council A Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC) accredited Forest Management certification from SGS assures buyers that timber has come from a forest which has been evaluated and certified as being managed according to the correct social, economic and environmental standards.

Marine safe A product that will breakdown in the ocean relatively quickly without leaving harmful toxins, chemicals or micro-objects behind.

DERMATEST® Guarantee Seal of Approval The patch test provides information about primary skin irritation and/or existing sensitisations that the product might provoke. Test substances are applied occlusively to the skin at appropriate concentrations. Epicutaneous contact with the test product is therefore restricted in terms of site and exposure time and is intensified by the occlusion conditions, so that absorption of the test substances is promoted. The skin is examined after 24, 48 and 72 hours. If your product passes this patch test, you will receive our “Dermatest® Guarantee” seal of approval in addition to the assessment report and certificate. The seal includes the date when the product was successfully tested.
