Senior Secondary Curriculum

YEAR 10 ENGLISH

OVERVIEW

Year 10 English is designed to prepare students for VCE and VCE - VM. Based on an understanding of student needs as identified by data analysis, students will be offered a range of learning opportunities and differentiated approaches to teaching. For some students, understanding the styles, structures, language features, images and vocabulary of complex texts will enable them to assess the qualities of written, spoken and multi modal communication. Using this knowledge students are able to justify their own interpretations and develop their own style in order to express complex ideas clearly. These students will study two written texts, a film and engage with a variety of formats related to contemporary issues. Other students may focus on developing their knowledge, skills and attributes relevant to reading, writing and oral language, and their practical application in the contexts of everyday life, family, employment, further learning and community. Texts for diverse purposes such as self expression, practical purposes, knowledge and public debate are explored and assessment is undertaken using a range of modes. Texts are often negotiated with students to enable them to better engage with other areas of the curriculum and their lives outside of school.
