SEMESTER TWO

Biology

Students analyse how biological systems function and respond to external changes in their environment. They explore the reasons and theories of why there is such a diversity of life on Earth. They apply geological timescales to elaborate their explanations of both natural selection and the theory of evolution. They identify the role of DNA and its importance in our understanding of biological processes. Students develop an understanding of cellular division and its connection to genetic inheritance. They develop understanding of cell division by exploring mutations and conditions which are genetically inherited.

Earth, Space Science

Students learn about the four interacting spheres of Earth (atmosphere, lithosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere) including composition, key features and functions. The mechanisms and components of the major nutrient cycles of the Earth including the carbon, water and rock cycles are reviewed. Students investigate and compare the natural and enhanced greenhouse effect and develop an understanding of the impact of increased atmospheric carbon on the global climate.
