Junior Alleynian 2023

SWIMMING Year 3 and 4 Swim Squad

n This year we have welcomed our new Year 3 squad members: Gilbert, Flyn, Hudson, Avary, Jesse, Ethan, Dylan, Theo, Henry and Zach. The Year 3 and 4 Swim Squad have continued to work on their technique, swimming all four strokes and have shown huge improvements with their dives, tumble turns and finishes, along with their relay takeovers. They have taken part in several friendly, fun galas against DPL and have participated in galas against JAGS and Alleyn’s. There is excitement amongst the swimming teachers about the Year 4 squad as they head into the years where they could represent the College in national events. Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) n In May Half Term, Louis, Charlie, Sam, Macsen, Rori and Felix in Year 5, and Spencer, Sam, Santi and Rohan in Year 6, represented the College at the IAPS National Swimming Finals at the London Aquatic Centre. At a qualifying gala prior to this event the boys swam in their events and competed with IAPS registered schools from across the country. The top 20 schools or individuals in each category, were invited to this final. Despite just having a week off school, the boys did superbly well and should be proud of their amazing achievements listed below. • The U10 4x 25 metre medley relay came in 11th place and took 7.01 seconds off their qualifying time. The boys in this relay were: Felix (backstroke), Macsen (breaststroke), Louis (butterfly), Sam (freestyle). • The U10 4x 25 metre freestyle relay came in 12th place and took 2.66 seconds off their qualifying time. The boys in this relay were: Felix, Macsen, Louis and Rori. • The U11 4x 25 metre freestyle relay came in 17th place and took 3.56 seconds off their qualifying time. The boys in this relay were: Spencer, Sam, Santi and Rohan. • Louis swam in the 25-metre butterfly race, coming in 15th place on the day of the final. • Felix swam in the 25-metre backstroke, coming in 15th place on the day of the final. English Schools Swimming Association (ESSA) n On Saturday 17 th June, Spencer, Thomas, Santi and Louis met at London Kings Cross Station to make the journey up to Sheffield to represent the College at the ESSA National Primary Finals. Despite a delayed train to Doncaster and no seat reservations on either of our London to Doncaster trains, this did not dampen their spirits! In a gala before this event, the boys swam against other London schools and were one of 24 schools to qualify for the U11 4x 25 metre medley relay. On the day, they placed 7th in the heats, qualifying for the A final, and came in 7th place. At the previous qualifying event, the boys did not meet the time for the freestyle relay. However, on the day, we were able to contact another school that could not attend the finals, and we swam in the U11 4x 25 metre freestyle relay. They came 12 th in the heats, qualifying for the B final, and finished in 11 th place. All-in-all, a hugely successful trip, especially considering that the boys had only one squad training session together due to other commitments. London Schools Swimming Association (LSSA) – Wednesday 21 st June 2023 n After a busy day at school, Louis, Macsen in Year 5 (who were both swimming up a year), and Spencer, Henry, Macsen, Thomas, Santi, Xiiang Yu, Edward and Rohan in Year 6, represented the College at the U11 LSSA Regional Finals at JAGS. At a qualifying gala before this event, the boys swam in their events and competed against other U11 pupils from primary schools across London. Louis won bronze in the 100m individual medley event, Spencer won silver in the 50-metre backstroke event and Thomas won bronze in the 50 metre breaststroke event. Special mention must also go to Macsen who made it into the final and came 6th, after a rather shaky start on the blocks in his qualifying race.
