Walking Tour: Financial District Visit the Financial District (FiDi) and some of the most historic sites of Manhattan. Travel the cobbles of Stone Street, see Trinity Church and its graveyard where Alexander Hamilton is buried,step inside Federal Hall, a national memorial on the site of the former City Hall, the 1703 building where George Washington gave his inaugural speech, touch Manhattan’s oldest fence that dates back to the late eighteenth century, and so much more. GINNY POLEMAN is a graduate of Cornell University, a trained docent for the Municipal Art Society’s official Grand Central Terminal tour, as well as a trained educational guide for 4th through 12th graders at Manhattan’s largest art museum. Walking Tour: Southern End of Riverside Drive In response to the success of Central Park, historic Riverside Park and its parallel avenue Riverside Drive were developed by Andrew Haswell Green, the city’s first comprehensive urban planner, who hired Frederick Law Olmstead for the design. Walk from 72nd Street up to 89th Street to view gilded age mansions by renowned architects such as C.P.H. Gilbert and Clarence True, as well as the Eleanor Roosevelt Monument and the Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Monument, among other memorial statues on the way. Monuments and Sculptures of Riverside Park Starting with the history, architecture, and interior of the Beaux Arts mausoleum known as Grant’s Tomb, take a virtual tour of the statues and monuments that line Riverside Park (designed initially by Central Park’s Frederick Law Olmsted and later Calvert Vaux). Focus on the art and the artists who created them. Study two of only five sculptures of historical women located in Manhattan. Learn about General Franz Sigel and Louis Kossuth and why they are celebrated in New York City. Additional highlights include the temple-like Soldiers' & Sailors' Monument, the Firemen’s Memorial sculpted by Attilio Piccirilli, and the Joan of Arc statue by Anna Hyatt.
