Role of Museums in American History How did museums become the public institutions they are today, and who determines their content, design, and perspective? Learn about how American history museums evolved and the role of key players. The first lecture will feature how history museums got their start. The second lecture will highlight the change over time and the challenge of “New” Americans. The third class wraps up the series with a focus on the role of women in the creation of America’s history museums. LAURA M. CHMIELEWSKI is Professor of Early American/Atlantic History and Museum Studies at SUNY Purchase. Visit the home of first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, discover the legacy of Jane Jacobs whose grassroots efforts preserved the neighborhood's unique character, and view the homes of artists, writers, daredevils and activists. Holiday Traditions in New York City Find out the history of New York’s world-renowned holiday traditions. Learn about the first Macy’s Thanksgiving parade and the genesis of those giant balloons. Rockefeller Center’s Christmas tree may be the more famous holiday tree, but it was not the first in the city. Explore the evolution of the holiday window displays in all the luxury department stores and the custom of tossing confetti in Times Square on New Year's Eve. GINNY POLEMAN is a graduate of Cornell University, a trained docent for the Municipal Art Society’s official Grand Central Terminal tour, as well as a trained educational guide for 4th through 12th graders at Manhattan’s largest art museum. Walking Tour: NYC Immigration's ManyWaves

Starting just north of City Hall Park and winding through the Lower East Side, explore how this neighborhood was shaped by the many waves of immigrants who came to NYC from the early 1600s to present day. View sites associated with German, Irish, African, Italian, Eastern European, and Chinese residents, and discuss how the history of immigrants in New York City shaped its past, present, and future..
