Celebrated Canadian Short Stories Cross our northern border into a thriving world of literature with a slightly different view of life. Read an assortment of short stories by Canadian indigenous, immigrant, and ex pat writers from cities, plains, and coasts, including Alice Munro, Michael Ondaatje, and Mavis Gallant. Selections include prize-winning stories by Thomas King on myths, Yann Martel on friendship, and Mavis Gallant on a child's understanding. For the first class, read "The Boat" by Alistair MacLeod and "The Street," the second chapter of the eponymous short story collection by Mordecai Richler. Students will receive PDFs of the assignments via email one week in advance of class and are asked to read once for story and a second time for setting, plot, character development, and theme. Students will also receive discussion prompts and are encouraged to submit written responses to be shared prior to class. MARILYN DeRIGHT is an adjunct professor of English at Iona College, and has taught literature, film, and drama for SAS for many years. 6 Sessions, starting Monday, September 9 (no class 10/14) • 1:00pm-3:00pm • Zoom • Course 12779 • $180

Literary Voices of Appalachia The vast, multi-state, mountain, valley and river country known as Appalachia has a complex culture. Read stories reflecting its small towns, impacted by location, coal, drugs, poverty, and returning veterans damaged by their war experiences. They are also places where the past is alive. Begin with stories by Thomas Wolfe and Breece D’J Pancake. Although they were written decades apart, both deal with the impact of change on settled places. Students will receive PDFs of the stories via email one week in advance of class and are asked to read once for story and a second time for setting, plot, character development, and theme. Students will also receive discussion prompts and are encouraged to submit written responses to be shared prior to class. MARILYN DeRIGHT (see bio for “Celebrated Canadian Short Stories”). 5 Sessions, starting Monday, November 18 • 1:00pm-3:00pm • Zoom • Course 12889 • $150
