Music Appreciation
Music of the Fifties The 50s music scene started off slowly, with remnants of 40s Big Band era and simple melodic tunes by vocalists like Patti Page and Frank Sinatra. But Rock 'n Roll, the birthright of the baby boomers, broke out in mid-decade and shook up the music world. It unsettled centuries of accumulated racial and social mores in America and around the world and united black and white teens in a common culture. Take a deep dive into rock music’s first decade and learn about the economic, political, and cultural forces shaping early rock music and about the songs, singers and writers. Share memories of a simpler and happier time. Three sessions will cover the early, mid, and late decade. DAVID M. CHENEY , former Chief Editor of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is a freelance writer, editor and external-relations advisor for international economic and financial institutions. Before joining the IMF, he was an economist and editor at Chase Manhattan Bank, and earlier a policy analyst at the U.S. Export-Import Bank. 3 Sessions, starting Thursday, September 12 • 7:00pm-8:15pm • Scarsdale High School • Course 12751 • $90
