John Singer Sargent and the Gilded Age
At the end of the nineteenth century, great wealth in America demanded great art, especially portraits of the rich and famous. High society sought out John Singer Sargent, the leading portrait artist of this era, to capture their opulence and glittering personalities that defined the Gilded Age. He also painted intimate portraits of friends, writers, and fellow artists who inspired his life. View many of John Singer Sargent’s most famous portraits, hear biographic details of the artist and his subjects, and see revealing videos that bring to life this new world of opulence in America. BOBPOTTER is a graduate of Syracuse University’s School of Visual and Performing Arts. He spent his early career as an art director and creative director for leading media companies including Scholastic Magazines, Time Warner, and National Geographic. Over the past decade, he helped create an arts therapy program for Save The Children, was a corporate development officer for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and oversaw marketing and communications for the Mystic Seaport Museum. Most recently, he launched a professional development program for art students at the Lyme Academy, and is a docent at the Yale Center For British Art.

Throughout the history of Western art, people of color are rarely seen in the paintings and collections of major museums. African American artists Amy Sherald, Kerry James Marshall, and Kehinde Wiley confront this reality by creating powerful images of the Black experience in history, popular culture, and American life in paintings that also echo their own personal journeys as artists finding new ways to express their unique artistic visions. View major works by these artists, learn about their own stories and the stories of the people and subjects they paint, and see video commentary by the artists themselves. Georgia O’Keeffe from New York to New Mexico The American West has inspired artists for centuries with its natural beauty and majestic landscapes. In the early twentieth century, Georgia O’Keeffe began her journey west from New York City after a passionate love affair with ground breaking photographer and modern art gallery owner Alfred Steiglitz. Restless to leave the urban landscape behind, she left to paint her unique new visions of the Southwest around Taos, New Mexico, creating what have become some of the most iconic paintings in modern art of landscapes, nature, and found objects. Through a wide range of images, a revealing profile of the artist, and videos of the artist discussing her work, explore the art of Georgia O’Keeffe and her enduring legacy as one of the leading women of modern art in the twentieth century.
