Mommy Dearest: An Examination of Motherhood in Three Contemporary Novels Contemporary fiction presents a wide spectrum of mothers: from devoted to absent, affectionate to abusive, domineering to aloof. Examine the notion of motherhood in the following novels: My Name Is Lucy Barton (2016) by Elizabeth Strout, Such a Fun Age (2020) by Kiley Reid, and The School for Good Mothers (2022) by Jessamine Chan. ANNA KATSAVOS , PhD, is an experienced book group facilitator. A SUNY Professor Emerita of English Literature and Women’s Studies, she has received numerous awards for teaching, and her scholarship has been published in a variety of literary journals. She has interviewed many best-selling authors and has presented interactive programs focusing on a wide range of women’s issues. Additionally, she conducts writing, editing and publishing workshops. 3 Sessions, starting Monday, September 23 (class meets on 9/23, 10/21, 11/18) • 10:00am-11:30am • Zoom • Course 12787 • $90 Older Women in Contemporary Literature: Voices of Wit, Wisdom, Strength, and Sass Focus on the depiction of older women in contemporary literature, with a spotlight on those who celebrate life, who look at their age straight in the face and not only accept who they are, but like what they see. Discuss those female characters who have grown wise, who remain smart-alecky, and who see age as just a number, not an obstacle. Examine the following novels whose protagonists refuse to go gently into that good night: Linda Olsson’s Astrid and Veronika (2007), Kent Haruf’s Our Souls at Night (2015), and Julia Alvarez’s Afterlife (2020).
