American Sign Language (ASL) This course is an introduction to the world of American Sign Language and deaf culture and will provide a basic knowledge of ASL and the deaf community's distinct cultural practices. The course is designed for students who have had little to no previous exposure to ASL. Students will develop a strong foundation of ASL vocabulary, an understanding of ASL syntax and grammar, and will be introduced to having
interactions with the deaf community. Purchase of Signing Naturally: Student Workbook, Units 1-6 is suggested. GIANNA HITTMANN holds a masters degree in the education of the deaf and hard of hearing from Teachers College at Columbia University. She is an elementary school teacher at a school for the deaf where she uses American Sign Language on a daily basis with her students.
