A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9
I want to start by congratulating our Year 9s on a fantastic start to the Spring term. There have been so many events and opportunities to celebrate their wonderful achievements and this week was no different. On Wednesday I was extremely proud to see the students who were part of the Poetry by Heart finals perform in assembly for Year 8 and the Senior Leadership Team. The performers delivered their poems with such flair and maturity- what an amazing achievement. I also want to celebrate the sporting achievements for Year 9 - including a fantastic basketball season and some amazing football and netball wins. I know that our PE team are so proud of our Year 9 sporting ambassadors - keep up the great work. Well done to all the students who are still achieving epraise points with their hardwork. Our top three epraise forms at the end of this half term are: 1. 9EMU 2. 9PWA 3. 9FCO Year 9s should all be thinking ahead to their options choices and I would like to remind all parents/guardians that the Options booklet has been emailed out and that students can access the Google Form via their Tutor Classrooms. Please can I ask that you spend some time over the break discussing the choices and finalising these before the deadline on Wednesday the 5th March.
I hope you have a wonderful half term.
MRS MORTIMER, HEAD OF YEAR 9
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins
In a dystopian future, the capital holds annual games where one boy and one girl (aged 12-18) from each of the 12 districts is chosen to fight to the death in an arena. The games are televised and shown across the country as a reminder to the labourers in the district that they are powerless against the capital. When Katniss’ sister has her name called during the annual reaping, Katniss volunteers to take her place as a daring act of sacrifice. The contrast between the glamour of the capital and the harsh conditions of the districts is an eye opening com- mentary on the dangers of political corruption and capitalism.
