THE K I N G ’ S B US I NE S S v. 10. It Is written. Compare His last ministerial words in Jn. 17:8, 14, 17.—-Bullinger. One step on Jesus’ part and He - would- have needed a Saviour instead of being one.— John son. v. 11. Devil leaveth Him. Christ has by His example taught us how to resist temptation. His example shows us the proper use of God’s Word. The greatest lesson is one of encourage ment. When One is set before us as our present Helper, who Himself has passed through the struggle, when we know that we are not alone in the bitterness of our spirit, what a differ ent matter does each „Christian’s ap pointed conflict become.—Alford. An gels came. The issue of this great con flict is instructive. The evil one goes, a company of angels come in his place. Why not before? They are not to share in Christ’s work. Why not? They sympathize with it. How often they are found to show this in the great crises of His work. (Matt. 1, 2; Lk. 22:43; Matt. 28:2, 25:31.) Observe that they come to sustain Him in, not to take Him away from, that work.— Horn. Com. Jesus Pleasing the Heavenly Father. Matt. 3:1-17. Lesson Story j In our story today Jesus has grown up to be a young man. The Bible does not tell us very much about Jesus as a little boy, but we know he obeyed his parents, for when he was 12 years old he visited the temple with them and other relatives and friends, and he enjoyed it so much that he for got to start home with the rest of the folks, but when they came back and found him, he went at once back home with them. Now Jesus had a cousin who was just a few months older than Jesus, whose name was John the Bap tist, and he went before Jesus telling the people about Jesus. Many of the people heard John the Baptist preach ing, and they were sorry for their sins and wanted to be saved and be baptized. When people are baptized it means they are sorry for their sins and want to be forgiven. Now while John was baptiz ing, Jesus came along and asked John to baptize Him. John the Baptist knew Jesus was the Saviour, who had no sin, and he told Jesus he (John) was not good enough or great enough to baptize Him. Now Jesus had no sins to be washed away; why then should He be baptized? It was because He had come on earth to obey all of Godi’ His Father’s commandments, for us, and in our place, so that if we believe in Him, we are saved because of His obedience. Jesus told John the Baptist that even if he could not understand all about why Jesus wanted to be baptized, it was right for him to do it, so John the Baptist did as Jesus asked, and baptized Jesus in the river Jordan. After Jesus was baptized, the heavens opened above Him, and there came down from tieaven what seemed to be a dove, and it lighted on- Him. It was God’s Holy Spirit that came down in the form of a dove. And then something very wonderful hap pened, while the people were all watch ing, God’s voice spoke out of heaven. Now be very quiet and I will tell you the very words God spoke about Jesus.
