The sword of the Spirit will cut even if the devil swings it. How much more abundant and per manent, however, are’ the results of re ligious effort when supplemented and re-enforced by a holy consecrated life. FRIDAY, Oct. 29. Matt. 7:24-29. The Two Foundations. The sermon on the Mount closes with a series of great alternatives. Th.ere is the strait gate vs. the wide gate, the, narrow way vs. the broad way, the rock foundation vs, the sand foundation. There is no middle ground or moral neutrality. Every human being is classified in one or the other of these whether consciously chosen or not. Entering upon the nar row way calls for agonizing effort, Luke 13:24, but it leads unto eternal life. One may build a stately palace upon the shifting sands. It may be embel lished and enriched by treasures of art. The fall thereof will be the greater.
One may build a humble little cottage on the solid rock of ages. It shall en dure amid the wreck of matter and the crash of worlds. SATURDAY, Oct. 30. Mark 1 :1 6 -2 ^ The Authority of Christ, 1 The authority of Jesus was as unique as it was impressive. His teaching produced as great an impression as His miracles. He had the authority of a holy character. This gave His words tremendous weight and force. There is nothing more commanding than a pure and lofty personality., He had the authority of perfect knowledge. He never conjectured or inferred. He never said, “ I don’t know.’ ’ He never said, “ Perhaps” or “ May I not.” His simple and oft-repeated formula is, “ I say unto you.” He had the authority of supreme power. He was the Al mighty Deliverer. He could exorcise the evil spirits and break the power of evil. He could open the door of every prison house. This is a most welcome revelation. Man is not only
