Sayce of Oxford Univer­ sity told the truth when he said: “ Higher Criticism saves no souls.” Forty-nine and one-half per cent of the Congregational Churches in the United States report in the last year hook not one addition even to membership. If Dr. John R. Mott is being correctly quoted in the papers, he is making some statements that indicate he is decidedly wobbly. Lately he is reported to have said to a gathering of college students,. “ When the facts of science are clearly in conflict with religious teaching, it is useless for preachers to insist on the latter.” Again he said, “ It is more necessary to be active than to be ortho­ dox.” The poor fellows who have tried to fit the Bible to the changing theories of science, have our sympathy, and as for “ activity,” there is considerable activity in a cage of monkeys to which many churches today might well he compared. The Episcopalian Bishop of South Florida while in England recently at­ tending the Episcopalian Conference, is quoted as having said, .“ The Episco­ palian Church should meet Christian Scientists and extract the truth from their doctrine.” Doesn’t the man know that Mrs. Eddy was careful to eliminate all saving truth when she prepared this stuff which seems so palatable to world­ ly people? Must the great Episcopalian Church get down on its knees before “ Mother” Eddy and say, “ Teach me?” A little girl the other day was eating her dinner when the golden rays of the sun fell upon her spoon. Putting the spoon to her mouth she exclaimed, “ O mama, I swallowed a spoonful of sun­ shine.” We know some people who would be better off if they would lay off taking pills and get some sunshine In their souls. We have noticed that when some of these preachers who rave on Sunday about the world that is moving onward
