Coolmore National Hunt Brochure 2025

A great National Hunt tradition! In the late 1800’s Edlington travelled between Fermoy and Cappoquin serving mares owned by the farmers of the Blackwater valley. Significantly the horse was owned by Thomas Magnier , and well over a century later Magnier is still a name to conjure with in the bloodstock business! In 1920 Michael J Magnier founded Grange Stud in Fermoy and hit the jackpot with his purchase of Cottage , resident stallion there from 1922 until his death in 1942. Cottage’s reputation was to be assured by the exploits of his most famous son Cottage Rake, trained by Vincent O’Brien to win three Cheltenham Gold Cups. Having topped the National Hunt sire list in 1938-1939, the season Brendan’s Cottage won the Gold Cup, Cottage regained his crown immediately upon the resumption of racing in Britain post-WWII. He headed the table on three more occasions, these titles mirrored by the Grand National successes gained by his sons Workman and Lovely Cottage and his daughter Sheila’s Cottage. Thomas J Magnier continued the Grange Stud tradition and was instrumental in the management of the stud career of Fortina , the only entire to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup and sire of two himself in Fort Leany and Glencaraig Lady. He also sired four Irish Grand National winners - all trained by Tom Dreaper. The next stallion of major note was Deep Run , purchased by the then 23- year-old John Magnier for 6,600gns at the Tattersalls December Sale at Newmarket in 1970. He went on to become the best National Hunt Sire of all time with 14 successive National Hunt sires championships from 1979/80 to 1992/93. At the turn of the century, Be My Native began his run of four straight championships, Flemensfirth topped the table two seasons running in 2017/18 and 2019, Milan was champion in 2019/20, Yeats in 2021/22 and 2022/23 while Walk In The Park recorded his first championship in the latest season.
