As I’ve mentioned in the past, football is a big part of my life. From watching games with my mom to sharing the same tradition with my daughter, I love seeing a game well- played. Even when our Eagles aren’t taking the field, I’ll still tune in from time to time if I think a matchup is going to be exciting. At the time of writing, the season’s just getting going, and it’s looking like we’ll be competitive this year — though I don’t think we’ll make the Super Bowl unless our defense shapes up fast. While I can’t predict how things will play out for the Eagles, I can hazard a guess that whichever teams do make it to the big game will have done so thanks to excellent coaching. Sometimes the head coaches are overlooked while discussing teams, especially if they don’t have an attitude or make a scene on the sidelines. But, if running a law firm has taught me anything, it’s that the right management of a team can make all the difference in the world. There is a surprising number of similarities between the two practices. For starters, it takes a lot of dedication to helm a law firm or a professional football team. It’s not enough that you might know how to approach a difficult bankruptcy case or respond to a shotgun formation; you need to know your team is as prepared as you are to meet these challenges. This means really getting to know the people you work with and putting in the hours to understand every level of your organization. Only then can you be an effective leader. Doing this homework is so important because a lead partner or a coach has one job at the end of the day: getting their team what they need to win. This can be resources for investigating a criminal case or investing in the right personal trainers to keep players in peak condition. This role most frequently boils down to recognizing and supporting talent. The best law firms and NFL teams always make sure they have the right people in the right places. After all, just like you wouldn’t want a fullback subbing in for a wide receiver, you wouldn’t want a contract lawyer attempting to handle your disability claim! Football and the law both require a broad WHAT MAKES A TEAM

range of skill sets and rely on professionals who can perform their role to absolute perfection. That’s why our firm doesn’t believe in jack-of-all-trades lawyers. We’ve been lucky enough to build an amazing team of professionals dedicated to their own particular practice area. So, as this football season really begins to heat up, I’ll be watching the decisions coaches make closely. I can also predict that I’ll head to a few games with my daughter and root on the two teams that mean the world to me: the Eagles and our firm. I’m incredibly grateful for the talent we’ve attracted here, and I can’t wait to see how far we can carry the ball forward in the coming year.

Go Eagles,

NO-CARVE PUMPKIN DESIGNS!

This issue, we’re stepping a little outside the bounds of Philly sports history. Instead, we wanted to explore the rich history of an all-American tradition that dates back longer than you might think: the Thanksgiving Football game. Even though our Eagles aren’t playing this year, if you’re NFL lovers like us, chances are you’ll be tuning in while the turkey’s in the oven. An Event as Old as Football The idea of playing football on turkey day far precedes the NFL and even professional teams. All the way back in 1876, the idea of a Thanksgiving match caught on in fledgling college leagues. Yale and Princeton made it an annual tradition, followed by the University of Michigan — three of the schools involved in the first efforts to standardize rules for intercollegiate football at the time. Because Thanksgiving was so closely tied to football as the sport was developing, no wonder the Thanksgiving football game tradition emerged. More Than Lions While Detroit and Dallas may have a monopoly on Thanksgiving games today, that wasn’t always the case. In the very early days of the NFL, many teams made a point of playing during the holiday. Jack-o’-lanterns go hand-in-hand with Halloween, but digging through the inside of a pumpkin is not something everyone enjoys. If you aren’t keen on cutting open a pumpkin, here are a few no-carve ideas you can try this Halloween! Haunted House Take a few pumpkins, stack them on top of each other, and create a spooky pumpkin haunted house! Then, use paint, balsa wood sheets, and hot glue to create silhouettes, ghosts, windows, and doors for a haunting effect! Creative With String Use cotton twine and hot glue to create a web-like design on the surface of your pumpkin. Don’t forget to add a few plastic spiders! You can also use string art to create ghostly words or images. Lay out your design with small pegs or nails and wrap the string around them to reach your desired effect. Nothing but Net You can create eerie pumpkins using fishnet stockings. Spray- paint your pumpkin if desired — just make sure the design of the stockings will stand out. Once the paint is dry, cut the legs off the stockings, slide the pumpkin inside, remove the extra fabric around the stem, and use hot glue to secure it. FEASTING ON FOOTBALL HOW THANKSGIVING BECAME GAME DAY

give white pumpkins a unique and vibrant look. A Spooky Monster By adding a witch hat, wrapping a pumpkin in

cheesecloth, attaching spider legs, or tying on a vampire cape, you can create a pumpkin version of the most popular Halloween monsters. Along with these accessories, you can also use paint, construction paper, and other craft materials to add the details that will make your creation pop!

However, the Detroit Lions managed to land a deal with NBC to broadcast their Thanksgiving games across America, solidifying their fame. After World War II severely limited NFL

rosters and shortened the football season, few teams held onto the tradition. A Leg Up Of course, the Eagles did play a role in a more modern addition to this holiday game. On Nov. 23, 1989, after crushing the Cowboys 27-0, Philadelphia’s own Reggie White became the very first recipient of John Madden’s now-famous “Turkey Leg Award.” A tongue-and-cheek gimmick at the time, the edible award would gain notoriety until the legendary sportscaster retired in 2001.

A FRIEND IN FINANCIAL NEED

WHEN A FRIEND ASKS YOU FOR MONEY

It’s natural that we want to help the people we care about. When someone falls down, you help them up. When a loved one is heartbroken, you help them move on. But, when a friend is in financial trouble, things can feel more complex. Since helping people through these hardships is one of our specialties, we wanted to share some advice on how you can navigate this difficult situation. Don’t Judge Talking about money can feel awkward under the best of circumstances, so don’t make this harder than it has to be. Moralizing speeches and dismissive comments are the last thing your friend needs right now, and it certainly isn’t going to encourage them to open up. Listen to them, and keep an open mind. Remember, anyone could find themselves in a similar situation after a run of bad luck. Help Identify the Issue Monetary problems can come in many shapes and sizes, and they take different approaches to solve. Sometimes, simply working with your friend to come up with a budget and savings plan is all they need. Other times, such as when they are inundated by calls from debt collectors, they might require professional legal help. Regardless, the first step is understanding the nature and extent of their financial troubles, so you can find them the support they need.

The Loan Question Of course, you may feel the need to provide more direct assistance. When a close friend asks you for money, it can be hard to say no regardless of your ability to give it to them. On the other hand, you don’t want to end up in a dispute over a loan you gave them and risk a falling out. If you do have the means and decide to give your friend direct financial assistance, lay out the ground rules in writing — including what happens if they fail to pay you back. However, if this last consideration is to help pay off other debts, it may be time for your friend to consider declaring bankruptcy. This option can give them a fresh start without putting your own finances at risk. Have them give us a call at 215-883-8532 (in PA) or 609-796-9852 (in NJ).

DirtyThis Halloween Why We Play Football onThanksgiving 3 When a Friend Asks You for Money Leftover Candy Snack Mix 4 The Real Legend of Sleepy Hollow

In 1790, a school teacher named Ichabod Crane was riding home alone from a harvest festival in the village of Sleepy Hollow when he encountered a mysterious rider on horseback. Crane, horrified by the horseman’s missing head, turned and ran in the opposite direction. The Headless Horseman gave chase, hurling his own decapitated head at the terrified teacher. Ichabod Crane was never heard from again ... or so goes “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. This story, first published in 1820, has become a Halloween favorite. The legend is so beloved that in 1997, the village of North Tarrytown, New York, where many events of the story take place, officially changed its name to Sleepy Hollow. Today, the town becomes one big Halloween party during the month of October. Sleepy Hollow is home to many historic landmarks, including the Headless Horseman Bridge and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving himself was laid to rest. Evening lantern tours of the cemetery are a popular attraction, and Irving isn’t the only spooky celebrity buried there. Fans of the Gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows” will be delighted to enter the crypt of famed vampire Barnabas Collins. HALLOWEEN CELEBRATIONS IN SLEEPY HOLLOW HAYRIDES AND HEADLESS HORSEMEN

Another highly anticipated stop for many guests is Sleepy Hollow’s premier annual attraction, Horseman’s Hollow, an experience not for the faint of heart. During the event, the 300-year-old Philipsburg Manor is transformed into a living nightmare, where vampires, witches, ghouls, and undead soldiers lurk in the shadows. They all serve the dreaded Headless Horseman and are determined to make sure guests don’t leave alive! But it’s not all scares in Sleepy Hollow. There’s plenty of Halloween fun for all ages. Sleepy Hollow boasts relaxing hayrides, tours of Irving’s home, live readings of famous Halloween stories, performances of a brand-new musical based on Irving’s spooky tale, and the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, an incredible exhibition of over 7,000 hand-carved pumpkins.

If you want a real Halloween experience, you can’t go wrong in Sleepy Hollow. Just be careful not to lose your head!
