A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 11
This week students have been working hard with mock exams and practices in computing, food tech and drama, alongside revision practice tests in lessons. These practice runs aim to prepare our students in the best possible way for their exams in the summer. This week I held an assembly for the Year 11 students on the inspiring film ‘Joy’ which brings to light the perseverance and brilliance of a female scientist in the quest for successful IVF treatment. Highlighting their struggle through various personal and professional setbacks and their ultimate success and drawing parallels with the experience of our students in their lives. I hope all the students are able to get a good balance of rest and revision over the half term break. Mock exams will follow the holiday and although nerve wracking we encourage the students to remind themselves they are just another in a long series of practice’s. All of these experiences will build up their resilience and increase their exposure to the exam environment and with every opportunity they will be able to refine their skills and improve.
Have a great break and let’s hope the weather starts to take a turn to feel a bit more like spring!
MRS ROOK, HEAD OF YEAR 11
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins
In a dystopian future, the capital holds annual games where one boy and one girl (aged 12-18) from each of the 12 districts is chosen to fight to the death in an arena. The games are televised and shown across the country as a reminder to the labourers in the district that they are powerless against the capital. When Katniss’ sister has her name called during the annual reaping, Katniss volunteers to take her place as a daring act of sacrifice. The contrast between the glamour of the capital and the harsh conditions of the districts is an eye opening com- mentary on the dangers of political corruption and capitalism.
