KEYSTROKE MONTHLY THE

APRIL 2019 An Indispensable Resource America’s Public Libraries T here are a lot of reports out there claiming that people still like libraries, but that might not actually be the case. Even though the number of Americans who had library cards had increased from 63 percent in 2006 to 68 percent in 2008, and 76 percent of Americans believe libraries do their job of serving their communities well, the number of people actually visiting libraries every year is falling. The percentage of adults who visited a library in the past 12 months dropped from 53 percent in 2012 to 44 percent in 2015. April 7–13 was National Library Week, and it was a great reminder to appreciate the myriad of services libraries make available to the public and consider why people are becoming disinterested in spite of this. As a high school student, and even as a college student, I never took the time to properly acknowledge everything libraries have to offer. I appreciate them a lot more now, and I want to encourage people to utilize the resources libraries provide.

to find your dream job. You can also use library computers to copy, print, and scan documents, and if you just need internet access, most libraries offer free Wi-Fi. Libraries also function as gathering places for the community. Many offer classes on finances, computer skills, and languages. If you’re feeling artistic, there are pottery classes and craft nights for all ages. If you’re looking for something less informative and more fun, there are movie nights, book clubs, and even bingo games offered at libraries, too. Even with all these resources open to the public and with all the good libraries do for their communities, they have received less and less funding over the past 10 years. This means that some of those resources may not remain available for public use. If you haven’t in a while, try to visit your local library and explore the opportunities it offers. You may find some worth fighting to keep. -Doug Barnes

“If you haven’t in a while, try to visit your local library and explore the opportunities it offers.”

There’s a lot more than just books at libraries these days. In addition to borrowing books, movies, video games, and audiobooks, some libraries have household appliances like irons, sewing machines, and cooking appliances available to use. You could also potentially borrow laptops, telescopes, and GoPro cameras. For kids, there are craft supplies, puzzles, dolls, and other toys available to borrow. While libraries lend much more than just books, they also provide a number of services, and their staff can help visitors with all sorts of different tasks. If you need help researching a topic, librarians are expert researchers and available to help. If you’re looking for the next step in your career, librarians can point you to the best resources

PEANUTS AND CRACKER JACKS The Best Opening Days in Baseball History

Baseball’s opening day has been an American holiday of sorts since the

uniform had already broken history. Despite his nationally-recognized skills — Robinson was named MVP of the MLB farm team league in 1946 — the backlash that followed his rise to the pros, both from fans and teammates, was palpable. Still, as well- known sportscaster Howard Cosell said, “Suddenly, it was a new beginning.” Considered one of the best teams in baseball history, the 1927 New York Yankees started their historic run and 25th season by dismantling the Philadelphia Athletics with a score of 8–3. The slugfest was true to form for the 1927 Yankees, whose players would go on to make up baseball’s famous “Murderers’ Row.” With sluggers like Lou Gehrig, Earle Combs, LOU, COMBS, AND BABE — OH MY!

Babe Ruth, Mark Koenig, Bob Meusel, and Tony Lazzeri, it’s no wonder this team went on to win its fifth championship that year.

Cincinnati Red Stockings threw out the first major league pitch in 1869. To celebrate the start of the 150th season of professional baseball, here are three of the best opening days in baseball history.

THE HAMMER TIES BAMBINO

For decades, no one could match George Herman Ruth. The Great Bambino’s all-time home run record seemed like an impossible feat of strength — that is, until Henry “Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron came along. On opening day, April 4, 1974, Aaron smashed his 714th homer, tying Babe Ruth for the most home runs ever hit and extending the Atlanta Braves’ shutout lead over the Cincinnati Reds. A few weeks later, Aaron surpassed Ruth’s record, prompting a standing ovation from the crowd.

A NEW BEGINNING

On April 15, 1947, an opening-day game changed the course of Major League Baseball. On this day, Jackie Robinson started for the Brooklyn Dodgers, becoming the first African-American player to start for a major league baseball team. Robinson’s historic showing was lackluster, going 0-for-3 at the plate and making a solid showing on the infield at first base, but his mere presence in a Dodgers

SPARE YOURSELF THE TROUBLE

Strategies to Prevent Getting Locked Out of Your Car

KEEP A SPARE WITH YOU

Once you’ve had spares made, keep one with you at all times. It might help to carry it in your wallet if you are in the habit of always having your wallet in your pocket. You also might carry a spare on a necklace or in a purse. Wherever you keep it, you will be far less likely to lock yourself out of your car if you have two keys instead of one. You can also keep a spare at home or with a trusted friend or neighbor. But if you’re out by yourself where no one can get to you quickly, having your friend deliver it to you might be more of a hassle. A key on your car will always be with you when you travel. There are many different products made for hiding your key on your vehicle. Just make sure it’s somewhere a potential thief can’t find it quickly. Of course, as your final line of defense, Pop-a-Lock is here to help you get back in your car and on your way. Whenever you’re in need, just give us a call. HIDE A SPARE ON YOUR VEHICLE

While we offer a wide range of services at Pop-a-Lock, from installing locks at your business and home, to making car keys, to repairing and replacing key fobs, a large part of our service is getting help to people who are locked out of their cars and homes. But just because we’re here to help doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to help yourself. If you’re constantly locked out, try some of these strategies for getting back in and moving on with your day.

MAKE A SPARE

If you don’t already have a spare key, have one or two made. Just having the spare is going to reduce the likelihood that you’ll have to call a locksmith every time. If you just need duplicates of a regular key without a fob, you can go to your local hardware store. However, if you need a copy of a key with a fob, Pop-a-Lock can duplicate and program your fob quicker and for a smaller price than a dealership.

At Pop-a-Lock, our security professionals know exactly what to consider when they perform one, and you can play a part in protecting your business, too. Your answers to these questions can help us get a better picture of how to make sure your business is protected. WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS FOR YOUR BUSINESS? Do you plan on growing your business in the future? Will the security system you have in mind take this growth into account? The likelihood of mergers or acquisitions for your business will necessitate a system that can adapt to those types of changes. WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT SECURITY SYSTEM LIKE? If you already have a security system in place, can it be upgraded as needed? Some factors that might necessitate an upgrade are adding more space, interior renovations, or even changes in the number or type of staff you employ. WHAT LEVEL OF PROTECTION DO YOUR ASSETS NEED? Does your business use expensive electronic equipment, like computers or laptops? Do you keep confidential customer or

patient information on the premises? Will you acquire or purchase other assets worth protecting? Make sure you take the value of your assets into account when you upgrade your security system.

HOW ARE EMPLOYEES ACCESSING THE BUILDING?

Whether your employees use a key, a key fob, or an ID card to get into the building, do you know how many of them you’ve distributed? Can employee keys and credentials be easily duplicated? If you’re unsure, that leaves a gap in security that can be easily exploited but also easily fixed.

PARIS ON A BUDGET?

3 Travel Myths You Should Stop Believing

Traveling has many social and educational benefits, but some people have hesitations that prevent them from jetting off on new adventures. Below are three debunked travel myths to give you some ease as you plan your summer vacation! MYTH: VACATIONS ARE EXPENSIVE. FACT: You can travel anywhere on a budget. Tracking flights to score the best deal, setting spending limits, and packing meals are a few ways to save money. Hostels and Airbnbs are great alternatives to spendy hotel stays. Additionally, you don’t have to cross the country to have a great trip. Every state has museums, unique roadside attractions, historical sites, and a booming nightlife. When you know your price limits and what you want to do, traveling can be a fun and inexpensive venture. MYTH: TRAVELING IS DANGEROUS. FACT: If you’re smart about what you do and where you go, traveling can be safe. Go with your gut and only stay somewhere that is approved by travel guides. Visit places you feel comfortable in, and do your research by reading travel blogs, websites, and books to find places that have been vetted by others. Traveling in groups can also be a great way to lower your risk of danger. As long as you plan ahead, you will have a safe trip.

MYTH: JET LAG IS CAUSED BY A LACK OF SLEEP. FACT: While jet lag can make you sleepy, it’s actually caused by a disruption in your circadian rhythm. Our bodies are cyclical, and the circadian rhythm is set by both a natural need for your body to reset and outside forces, such as your job, time zone, and diet. Travel can disrupt this rhythm and routine, which leaves you lethargic during and after your vacation. Sticking to water before and during your flights and staying physically active during and after traveling are great ways to fight jet lag and get back into your normal rhythm.

Don’t let these travel myths keep you from seeing the world. Set a budget, go with your gut, and prepare for a shifting rhythm to make your next adventure the best one yet.
