Support during learning shouldn’t stop when the programme is complete. Continuing professional development (CPD) is an important aspect of learning in today’s society and work culture. As well as providing good role-modelling standards, continuously developing both professionally and personally will contribute towards career progression and raise the standards of the payroll profession. It also demonstrates commitment in achieving Individual Chartered Status (ICS) as a member of a professional body, such as the CIPP. Keeping up to date with industry is merely keeping pace with change and should be seen as a given by individuals, not a differential. In the growing technological environment that we work in, social and professional media such as Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and Whatsapp are finding crucial positions in the learning process. Communities of practice become much more accessible, whilst updates and

awareness campaigns are often found on the pages of LinkedIn. Workplace policies banning or even limiting the use of such media should consider the impact of doing so on the individual’s capacity to keep up to date, learn and be supported whilst learning.
