Message from Executive

2023 Issue 12

As the year comes to a close, I would like to thank you for you diligence and work over the past year. This month more than ever I have been reminded that the hospital is defined by its people and their spirit. At the various cele- brations we have held across the month it has been heart warming to see the fun and collegiality that has come out, and the connection that exists across the hospital. The tinsel trophy was hotly contested, with a huge amount of creativity and it was lovely to see so many of you at the BBQ. Whether you are spending it with family, travelling, working or resting, I wish you a Merry Christmas. Thank you to those of you who will be working over Christmas and continuing to serve our community. I would like to acknowledge the retirement of Dr Ross White and recognise his huge contribution to Ryde Hospi- tal over many years. He will be greatly missed. Best wishes to Ross as he embarks on this new chapter in his life.

Jenny McConnell, A/General Manager

Redevelopment at Ryde

It has been a busy time for the Ryde Redevelopment project team as we work behind the scenes to award the ten- der to the main works builders. As part of this work, the General Manager announced in November that stage 1 and stage 2 will be built concurrently. This is a wonderful opportunity to have the new Ryde hospital completed 12 – 18 months early. There will be however more disruptions as a result and the team have been meeting with the department managers affected to discuss staging options and timeframes. We are hoping to have confirmed all of the clinical moves by the end of the year so that it can be announced to staff and that we can work collaboratively with departments to support the moves. Some key points for noting are; • The redevelopment team is working towards awarding the main works construction contract with works expected to start in early - mid 2024. • The construction staging plan for the redevelopment is being reviewed as part of the main works procure- ment process. There may be an opportunity to deliver the clinical service priorities within a shorter con- struction timeframe. • Northern Sydney Local Health District and Health Infrastructure are working through the options and what this means for staff, patients, suppliers and the community.

• Our early works builders HPAC have completed onsite and are moving on to other projects.

• The main weed eradication in the Blue Gum High Forrest is now complete and the transformation of this area is impressive (see photos below). We know that any organisational change can have an impact on employees, we are actively working to finalise planning so that we can work together to overcome any challenges and ensure a smoother transition to the new ways of working. While we are working through the construction staging, the redevelopment team can be contact- ed with any questions.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Ryde Redevelopment and the Team would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and merry Christmas.

Library Update

In 2019, NSLHD Population Health Promotion conduct- ed a research study to identify the reasons women aged 35 - 59 years who reside on the Northern Beaches are drinking alcohol; and explore drinking behaviours that increase the risk of harm and implement strategies to address these. A steady upward trend in the number and rate of alcohol - attributable hospitalisations for women in NSLHD (since 2001) and the highest number and rate of alcohol - attributable hospitalisations for women in NSW brought about the need to conduct further research and explore the drinking behaviours among this female cohort. The research included two phases: qualitative focus groups and a quantitative survey. The themes identified from the focus group sessions were categorised as: 1. Short term release and escape turned habit 2. “ Go on have another one ”: lived experience of judge- ment and pressure to fit in 3. “ It brings us together ”: Creating and strengthening social connections 4. “ You don ’ t feel like it ’ s going to kill you right now ”

To learn more about the research findings, visit the recently published paper here: The role of alcohol in the lives of midlife women living on the Northern beaches of Sydney, Australia - ScienceDirect For more information, visit Drink Less. [We were} advised that RNS was backed up so [we were] taken to Ryde Hospital. Being there since 1934 I found that a Health Facility is not defined by its age but by it’s people. Taken straight into Emergency [we were] re- ceived with Care and Efficiency by everyone involved. A CT Scan was done in a timely manner and the results were conveyed quickly, the worst had been avoided! Home care instructions given we were permitted to leave. I would like to say that I feel proud to live in a Commu- nity where such Excellent Emergency health care is not based on Race, Creed, Status or Financial re- sources.....THANK YOU

Dr Ross White

A Farewell to an Esteemed Colleague and Friend

Dr Ross White has had a very long association with Ryde Hospital - first by being born in Denistone House, then serv- ing as a medical student coming here to learn suturing in the ED, then coming back to join the fledgling Hospitalist Ser- vice in 2007. Ross had had a remarkable career as a true generalist, including country general practice and obstetrics, then as a drug and alcohol doctor and methadone prescriber, a palliative care doctor, and a cardiothoracic surgical registrar and ED senior. All before embracing the new challenges of Hospital Medicine.

Across his career he has provided care and advocacy for junior doctors through the Australian Salaried Medical Officer Union and the Australasian Society for Career Medical Officers.

At Ryde he has contributed greatly to nurturing and strengthening our medical workforce, and has been the longest serving Director of Prevocational Education and Training (DPET) in NSW history. Over his 16 years here he has cared for the JMOs in difficulty and mentored the systems hat support them, participated in countless digital transformations, created and managed a JMO web site, and moved progressively into a clinical quality role to support the systems that support the staff who work here.

As our Blood Committee guru, as End of Life advocate and review member of the Clinical Incident Review committee and Medication safety, he has brought a wealth of knowledge and experience and a unique perspective to the table.

His exceptional work in helming the CEC Death Review process, linking it to relevant service review mechanisms and reporting up the line, has been acknowledged at a state level.

But beyond the list of accomplishments, it is the person we value. Ross is a raconteur - a teller of stories about all man- ner of things, from the sometimes quite extraordinary experiences he had as a country GP, to the finer details of world war history or all there is to know about some obscure medical condition. It is a complex mind map underlying an unpre- dictable but always entertaining conversation with Ross, but what shines through every conversation is his sharp intel- lectual curiosity, warmth and kindness, unfailing good humour and a generosity of spirit that we all know and love. This generalist temperament underpinned his most personally valued role as the long standing Staff GP here, a role that those who worked with him could see he found central to his life - and his care in that role has been especially val- ued across the campus in time of trouble and difficulty. That special connection to all our hearts was reflected in the wide and wonderful attendance at his farewell. We will miss all of those qualities and all the terrible jokes, and Ryde will be a poorer place without you. We wish the very best for you retirement and happiness in your complete attention to family and loved ones. We look forward to see- ing you at the opening of the new hospital.
