Sometimes an orthosis or prosthesis will have to be altered in order to allow for different physical activities. Additionally, it is normal for the limbs to swell a bit in the summer, which may make your device seem tight or uncomfortable. If you notice any discomfort at all, your CPO can provide you with the resources you need to enjoy a cool and comfortable summer. (continued from outside) • Keep a dry towel handy. One of the easiest ways to stay cool while wearing an orthotic or prosthetic device is to keep a dry towel around to wipe off any sweat buildup. Make sure to dry off both your device itself, as well as any liner you may have, in addition to the skin that it covers. For added relief from the heat, wrap the towel in an ice pack to allow for a cool compress when wiping away sweat! • Use prosthetic socks. If you use a prosthetic device, it is important to use prosthetic socks when going out in the heat. This will help keep the skin beneath your prosthesis dry, in order to avoid slipping and chafing. • Ice the area as needed. Keeping a small cooler around with ice or an ice pack is a good idea when staying outside for extended periods of time. Heat can cause the limbs to swell and ache as you walk, and ice can help you find some relief. So, whether you’re hiking some trails or relaxing on the beach, make sure to
