JULY 2024
A NOTE FROM SYLVIA As we head into deep summer, I am reminded of the profound sense of community and patriotism that Independence Day evokes. It’s a time to come together with family and friends, reflecting on our nation's history and looking forward to its future. At Twin Cities PBS, we have a wonderful lineup of programming to enhance your 4 th of July commemoration and provide entertainment for the entire month. We are thrilled to present A Capitol Fourth 2024 , the 44th annual edition of America's longest-running live national Independence Day TV tradition. Broadcast from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, this year’s celebration gives you a front row seat to our country’s biggest birthday party. Join us on July 4 at 7 p.m. and again at 8:30 p.m. on TPT 2 for performances by top stars from pop, country, R&B, classical, and Broadway, all accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the premier pops conductor Jack Everly. Additionally, we are excited to bring you The Empire Builder: James J. Hill and the Great Northern Railway , a four-part documentary series that delves into the compelling story of one of America’s most influential industrialists. Known as "The Empire Builder" and "The Devil's Curse," James J. Hill’s legacy is both celebrated and controversial. This series, which will explore the complexities of his life and the vast impact of the Great Northern Railway, premieres on July 12 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2. With the Summer Olympics beginning later this month in Paris, we turn our attention to another athletic spectacle with Gods of Tennis , a three-part series that explores the golden era of tennis when legendary players excelled and reshaped societal perspectives on – and off – the court. Starting on July 23 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2, the series features classic footage and interviews with tennis greats such as Billie Jean King, Arthur Ashe, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, and Chris Evert. As always, none of this would be possible without the unwavering support of our members. Your commitment to our mission allows us to bring these rich stories to life.

Connecting Minnesota: One Story at a Time BY KAOMI LEE
When I was hired in 2017, it was a bit of a gamble for both Twin Cities PBS and me. I had returned to the U.S. after a year-long stint in Seoul, Korea as a Fulbright senior scholar on a journalism research grant. I had the journalism chops, having won peer- reviewed awards for my radio work in several states. But Almanac needed someone with on-camera experience to report on issues important to Greater Minnesota, with new funding from the Bremer Foundation and others to do the work. The question of whether I would work out or not was front-of-mind for both my future boss, longtime Almanac executive producer Brendan Henehan, and myself. Would I be able to make the medium switch from audio to visual? Six and a half years later, I’m still here. In retrospect, Brendan and I had little to fear.
There are two distinct reasons. For one thing, I had a solid grasp of the nuts and bolts of news reporting. I knew how to spot a story, find good characters, listen for the money quote. Journalism school had drilled into me the mantra of answering the who/ what/when/where – and perhaps most importantly in public media – the why. I had a reporter’s insatiable curiosity. That’s not to say there wasn’t a learning curve. There was. I won’t do a deep-dive here, but suffice to say that writing for the eye and for the ear are not the same thing. The second reason, however, was not as obvious. It had been years since I had grown up in small communities as a pastor’s kid in Greater Minnesota (Gibbon and Taylors Falls). I thought it would be like the proverbial ‘coming home.’ It was and it wasn’t. I am an adult now and a Twin Citian. Reporters know that trust is earned and not given lightly. But I soon learned that my background of growing up in small, rural communities made me relatable to the people I was interviewing. They knew where my hometown was, and that polka had once been king. They understood the life I came from, and possibly I could understand theirs. That has been helpful so many times to open doors. I’ve also learned that as cliché as it is, times have changed. Residents in Greater Minnesota are not necessarily tied to the farm economy. New Minnesotans have moved in – like southeast Asians, Latinos and east Africans. New flavors, faces and energy are adding to the vibrancy and survival of many of these communities. My story on how the diversity of the students at Austin Public Schools and the impact that will have on that community for years to come, was a good reminder that Greater Minnesota has been, and is, changing. Difference was no longer along religious affiliation, or if your family name had a ‘son’ or ‘sen’ like the small towns of my youth.

JULY 2024
There is a lot of pride of living in open spaces. Commutes are short, civic and school participation can be high and where you might get a friendly wave from a stranger. People in Greater Minnesota are not ‘deprived’ or ‘less fortunate’ than their metro counterparts. In fact, most residents are there by choice, like the Ivy-educated Ingrahams, who left their suburban East Coast lives behind and moved their family to Red Lake Falls. They want what a slower-paced rural life can give them and their kids. Their story was another good reminder that people in Greater Minnesota are not a monolith and an uncultured cliché. In New London, I profiled an artist, Bethany Lacktorin, who is helping to revitalize her community with visionary programming at her local theater. In Hovland, we met Linda Newman, who lives off-grid with her sled dogs. She specializes in women-only outdoor adventures, but has felt the economic effects of last winter’s warmer temperatures. In their own way, these Greater Minnesotans are living their lives to the fullest in the way they’ve chosen. I am lucky to have the opportunity to share their stories.
In a way, that is how I see my job. That interesting people are doing interesting things, all over our state. There are also challenges. Climate change, global competition, consolidating healthcare delivery, Internet-based economies and shifting political winds – all force us to consider our values. Almanac is in its 40th year and is the longest running prime time television program in our state history. Every week, we try to earn the trust of our viewers by having important dialogue on politics and public affairs. I am proud of the work our small team collectively does and of my role in bringing the voices of Greater Minnesotans to a statewide audience.
And in these divisive times, the work has never felt more vital.
Tune in to Almanac , Fridays at 7 p.m. on TPT 2, or stream on TPT.org/almanac .
Join Almanac at The Minnesota State Fair for a live taping on Friday, August 23, 11 a.m-12 p.m., and meet Kaomi and the hosts afterwards. For complete details, including taping location, visit TPT.org/events .

TPT Passport Q+A
Did you know that, as a member, you get access to extended, on-demand programming through TPT Passport? This month, we’ve rounded up some answers to commonly asked questions. As always, you are welcome to reach out to members@tpt.org to solve any tech issues you might encounter.
What is TPT Passport? TPT Passport is a benefit for members who give $60 or more annually: one that requires a username and password (which you can create by going to TPT.org/sign-in and setting up an account) that you use to log in to TPT.org or the PBS App to watch additional episodes of your favorite TPT shows. Whether you’re on the site or in the app, you’ll notice a small compass symbol in the corner of the show image. That’s your invitation to watch a show that’s only available to members. How can I access shows within Passport on my SmartTV? By using the PBS App! Download the app from the app store, and use your TPT Passport credentials to log in and gain access to extended programming. Why do I need to log in for some shows and not for others? A lot of shows are available for all to stream online. Episodes marked as “Passport” are shows you’ll need to log-in to watch, whether that’s online or on the app.
Can I watch TPT Passport shows online? Yes! Head to TPT.org and search for your favorite shows in the search bar. Watch on-demand videos after logging in.
What shows are on TPT Passport? All kinds of shows! TPT adds new shows every week. From Masterpiece Classics , to Finding Your Roots , Austin City Limits , America’s Test Kitchen , and many more.

STEM, Snacks, and Summertime Fun at the Library BY KEVIN YANG
It’s a chance for all of us to come together and build relationships (and puppets!) on a summery Saturday afternoon at the library. Caylee Haus Reger, Manager of General Audience Engagement and lead coordinator for this year’s program, shares how the events fit into the greater mission of her team, “Our Lifelong Learning team at TPT seeks to provide meaningful and engaging learning experiences for people of all ages. We are grateful that the Summer STEM Events allow us to connect with multigenerational families. It’s wonderful getting to be in different communities across the metro to learn, build relationships, and create memories together.” This event would be impossible without our wonderful partners at the Metropolitan Library Service Agency (MELSA), a regional library system that services the eight library systems in the 7-county metro area. We’ve seen this program grow from four library partners during our first year of programming, to 18 library partners across all eight MELSA library systems for this year’s events.
For the past three summers, I’ve gotten the chance to help out with Summer STEM Events. It's a program where TPT invites families to stop by at a local library where they can try hands-on STEM activities and meet characters from the TPT-produced program, Hero Elementary . As a staff member who mostly works behind the scenes for our education team, I love helping out at these events because it’s an opportunity for me to engage with the kids, parents, and families who are a part of our community. Engagement can take a lot of different forms at our events. It can involve helping a kid build a Daniel Tiger hand puppet from a paper bag. It can involve helping someone brainstorm the right questions to ask their friends so that they can guess which mystery animal is on their head. It can involve giving Sara Snap a big high-five and letting others know it’s okay to give her a big high-five back. Engaging with our community, especially at events like these, is an opportunity for all of us to get to know each other better. It’s a chance for the community to better understand that our station does so much more than make TV shows. It’s a chance for me to better understand the real people behind the email addresses and Facebook likes.

In many ways, our partnership with the libraries is a perfect match. In a conversation with Paul Ericsson, Western Branches Manager with the Carver County Library, Paul shares what he appreciates about our work together, “One of our broader strategic goals is to increase participation with community partners... You're bringing skill sets and opportunities that we may not be able to take on.” As institutions committed to engaging learners with media, TPT and libraries both understand the unique challenges that students face during the summer and how summer programs can help meet these challenges. Paul shares, “Some of these kids are out of school by the end of May or first week of June. They go all the way into August and early September without having meaningful engagement. We think that we provide a good balance and range of options for families to participate.” In addition to being a fun opportunity for participants to play, these events also supplement the breadth of programming that libraries put on to combat the summer slide and to keep kids excited about learning all year long.
So, if you’re looking for a fun and educational way to spend a day at the library, stop by and say hi at any of our events. We’ll be here all summer!
For upcoming library dates visit TPT.org/events or turn to page 25.

From Athens to Tokyo: Running from Alzheimer’s By Paul Wynn
Anthony Copeland-Parker and Catherine Elizabeth Popp, known as Tony and Cat, have captured people's hearts worldwide with their astonishing stories of resiliency. The pair remade their lives in their 50s as endurance athletes and inspired numerous people as they set out on a once-in-a- lifetime journey to run across the world. Tony and Cat's "travel-thon" began in 2014 when he found out he needed an aortic valve replacement, and she was diagnosed with early- onset Alzheimer's disease at 53. They started mapping out what they wanted to do and where they wanted to be and the answer was always this: running marathons worldwide. "We asked ourselves why we need a house, car and all the material stuff. Why not sell it all and travel from country to country like nomads?" Tony says. "By being together 24/7, I would be able to pay closer attention to the changes in Cat's physical and mental condition." "We have no idea how much time we will have together, but through my online research there was a lot of information about the benefits of exercise to slow down cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer's," notes Tony. Together, they have traveled to 82 different countries and run at least half-marathons in thirty- five countries and on all seven continents. They ran all six major marathons, including New York City, Boston, Chicago, Berlin, London and Tokyo. About two years ago, Cat started experiencing seizures about every two to three months. She could not run a complete marathon, so they opted to do half-marathons.
Tony pushes her in an adult-size stroller, aka the "CatMobile," for about 10 miles, and then Cat walks a half mile at a time for about three miles during the race. They have abandoned the nomad lifestyle as international travel has become too demanding. The couple put down roots after Tony chose a senior living facility near his daughter and her family. The couple lives in an apartment in the independent living section, with nearby memory care facilities. There are plenty of outdoor sidewalks and over two miles of indoor corridors for walking. Cat walks about six to eight miles every day.
"I promised Cat a long time ago that I'm never going to leave her side," says Tony.

‘Can We Talk?’ How to Have Civil Conversations Again By Marie Sherlock
"A house divided against itself cannot stand."
Our deep polarization is "harming friendships, family relationships and community cohesion," says Joan Blades, co-founder of Living Room Conversations, a nonprofit working to help reverse this trend. Both Democrats and Republicans say the number one thing that “gives them meaning in life” is family and friends. A 2023 study found about 90% of both Democrats and Republicans embrace similar values, among them compassion, respect, personal accountability and fairness. Here's the rub: The study that found 90% of both parties overwhelmingly hold the same values? It also found that only about a third of each group believed members of the opposing party actually cherished those same principles.
Abraham Lincoln famously declared this principle (of biblical origin) in 1858. The nation was being torn apart by the issue of enslaving people — a dispute that would eventually result in four years of bloody civil war claiming the lives of an estimated 620,000 soldiers. We are, once again, "a house divided." A 2023 Pew Research Center poll found that, when scholars asked Americans to describe politics in a single word, an overwhelming, bipartisan majority (79%) expressed a negative sentiment with "divisive" the most frequently used word. And it's not just politics that we're disgusted with. It's become decidedly more personal: A hearty majority of us attribute negative traits to people on the other side. In a 2022 Pew study, 72% of Republicans surveyed said they believed that Democrats are more immoral than other Americans; 63% of Democrats felt the same way about Republicans.
A growing constellation of organizations is working to undo the damage caused by polarization.
In 2017, the #ListenFirstCoalition was formed with a common goal of "bringing Americans together across differences to listen, understand each other and discover common interests." More than 500 nonprofit groups have joined the effort, conducting research, providing training and bringing communities — even legislatures — together to build bridges. Many of these groups offer dialogue programs utilizing a “contact theory” approach — the idea that when individuals and groups interact with "outgroup" members they develop more positive perceptions of them.
