C urmel Moton is believed by some to be boxing’s finest phenom and a certified star in the making. The eye test and sizzle reel certainly verify the skillful lightweight’s bodacious billing, and being backed by Floyd Mayweather Jr. further perpetuates his promise and potential. The 19-year-old protege wasn’t born and bred into boxing like his mentor, however, and he’s had to carve his own path to earn his fair share of accolades, which have included 18 national titles and a reported amateur record of 145- 5. The “hard work and dedication” that Mayweather famously preached during his heyday is now being mirrored by Moton, a crown jewel of Mayweather’s stable much like Gervonta Davis was at one time. Moton made his pro debut at 17 to much fanfare, seen as having all of the ingredients required to be a future world titleholder. “Ten years from now, I’ll be the biggest name in the sport, the face of boxing and an undisputed champion,” Moton told The Ring. Although he just had his dental braces removed, Moton has flashed a megawatt smile ever since he first started facing the cameras. But once he laces up the gloves and enters the ring, his aura reaches levels that match his vicious power- punching pedigree.

PROSPECT WATCH: Curmel Moton By Manouk Akopyan
Moton has a mountain of hype around him, and his highlights on YouTube have reached multimillion views. His confidence and following certainly comes from Mayweather’s rub, but his elite skills have gotten rubber-stamped by the sport’s top talent evaluators as well as the stars he’s sparred with. “Having Floyd in my corner as a mentor has given me the extra upper hand, a thousand percent,” says Moton. “I’ve soaked up so much game from him and the other guys at the gym. I’m way ahead of the game with all of their support.
