Tech Tip Recommended Lubricants Detroit Locker Most gear oils are sufficient, however, a qual- ity petroleum-based lubricant is recommended. Synthetic oils and friction modifiers are not necessary. Detroit Truetrac A quality GL5 rated, petroleum-based oil is recommended. Synthetic oils may be used if desired per axle manufacturer’s recommenda- tions. Friction modifiers should not be used as they will decrease differential performance. Eaton Posi A quality GL5 petroleum-based oil is recom- mended. A four ounce bottle of friction modifier is necessary for optimum performance.

Detroit Truetrac uses a proven helical gear design that eliminates friction plates, cones and springs for maintenance-free traction. The Eaton Posi utilizes carbon friction discs behind each side gear that are pre-loaded with a central spring assembly that increases the clamping load as input torque increases.
