PACKAGING THE INJURED PERSON

The aim of this lesson is to
refresh that the participants can fit a harness onto the injured person and package
them onto a rescue stretcher or transfer board for safe transportation, and to use various methods for the head support of an injured person during extraction from an enclosed space. In addition, the participants shall understand the risks posed to the injured person by using a cervical collar and be able to mitigate those risks.
After having successfully completed this lesson, the participants can:
19) Take initiative and perform a pre -use inspection of a rescue stretcher; how to fit a harness and package an injured person on a rescue stretcher; and how to create an attachment point on a transfer board by attaching or choking an anchor sling through the handles of the foot and top of a transfer board with a carabiner attached (Ability, intermediate level)
20) Take initiative to select the correct safety equipment, fit a helmet and safety glasses correctly to an unconscious injured person (Ability, intermediate level)
21) Act independently to fit a cervical collar to an injured person understanding the risks involved in the fitting of a cervical collar (Ability, intermediate level)
Where possible the participants shall work in teams of two .
Note
If feasible , medical advice according to site emergency response plan should be obtained before securing an injured person to a transfer board . Additionally, the injured person must always be attached to an approved attachment point
ELEMENT 4.1 - PACKAGING THE INJURED PERSON

22) The participants can perform a rescue by packaging an injured person on a rescue stretcher and enable safe transportation in either a vertical or horizontal configuration. This is be achieved by carrying out regular checks, using the available equipment, and avoiding head down config uration of the injured person (Skills, intermediate level)
