My Favorite Time of the Year —
As many of you know, Halloween is my favorite holiday. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always looked forward to the big day — and I still do today! However, I look forward to Halloween more as an adult because I get to share it with my family, and we’ve created our own traditions. To this day, my favorite tradition is picking out Halloween costumes. Since I was a kid, I have loved putting together elaborate costumes. My mom and I would go to the fabric and sewing store to get all the necessary materials. While my mom wasn’t a seamstress, you’d never know that with all of the effort she put into our costumes! In fact, one year, she made me a full vampire costume, including a spooky-looking double- breasted vest and a double-sided cape. It was one of my first intricate costumes, and it was incredible. My mom helped me repurpose the vampire cape into a Jedi cloak the following year. I got a lot of mileage out of that cape. These days, though, I don’t have as much time to put together an intricate costume, but I love it all the same. So now, Ashley, Jade, and I will go to a local Halloween store, which has genuine Hollywood-style costumes. This store isn’t like your typical Spirit Halloween store only open during the season; this store is open all year round. As a horror movie fan like myself, I love seeing the costumes they have and how realistic they are. We prepare for Halloween months in advance — that’s how excited we are! So, we usually head to the Halloween store and pick out our costumes in late August. It’s always fun to go with a family theme, spearheaded of course by our daughter, Jade. This year Jade wanted to go the “spooky route” and selected a fantastic witch costume. Ashley and I of course followed her lead with accompanying witch and warlock ensembles! Another one of my favorite Halloween traditions is to watch as many scary movies as possible - this is just for Ashley and I though as Jade is still too young. Our favorite franchise is “Halloween,” and we’re anticipating the release of the final It’s Halloween!
movie. If we’re not watching “Halloween,” we are binge- watching other classic horror movies. After all, AMC always features the best horror movies to get your skin crawling during the fall season! While we don’t watch scary movies with Jade, Disney+ has several “spooky” shows and movies that are fun for the whole family. For example, we are currently watching the Disney Channel’s suspense and time-travel series, “Secrets of Sulphur Springs.” So, if you’re looking for family-friendly Halloween shows and movies to watch this month, Disney+ has tons of options. Another great option is Freeform’s (also known as ABC Family) 31 Nights of Halloween. They play all kinds of family-friendly and fan-favorite Halloween movies. On most nights, you can find us all snuggled up on the couch watching these holiday classics. I love watching these movies with my family and seeing Jade love Halloween as much as Ashley and I do! As you can see, my family and I take Halloween very seriously and enjoy celebrating it! We can’t wait to trick-or-treat, finally wear our costumes, and participate in all things spooky.

While Keeping Safety in Mind Have a Spooky Good Time
Halloween is all about letting the ghoul times roll, but monsters and ghosts aren’t the only things parents need to worry about this holiday. Most older kids don’t want an adult chaperoning — they want to venture off with their friends to enjoy the night all on their own. Here are a few safety tips so that you and your older kids can enjoy the spooky evening with no worries. Plan a route and curfew. Some older kids still love the nostalgia of trick-or-treating, or maybe they plan to pull some Halloween pranks with their friends. Whatever the reason may be, they may want to enjoy the evening without a parent.
return. This way if something happens and you cannot reach them or they aren’t back in time, you have a general idea of where they can be on the route. Pack the essentials. Always make sure your child has their phone on them in case of an emergency, no matter if it’s to call you or an emergency line. You could even share locations so you’re able to track where
they are or use another location tracking app like Life360 or FamiSafe that’s available on your devices.
If they plan to stay out for a while, have your child take water bottles, flashlights, and even a small first-aid kit with them. They actually come in handy when exploring the Halloween night and the unexpected happens. Older kids deserve a bit of freedom, as long as they can do it responsibly. Consider these tips to make sure the night is trick- free and full of the best treats.

My case was dismissed in a timely manner, and I couldn’t be more thankful for all of his hard work. Matthew is extremely knowledgeable, responsive, and affordable in my opinion. Choose which routes you feel comfortable with them going on, either somewhere nearby or somewhere in the neighborhood. And choosing a curfew time is essential so you know when to expect their

‘AMERICAN DIRT’ BY JEANINE CUMMINGS Matt’s Book of the Month
Recently, I read “American Dirt” by Jeanine Cummings. This book was a recommendation from my wife, Ashley, who read it first. She said it was so well-written, and that she thought I would enjoy reading it too. I knew if my wife loved a book, I likely would, too. So, I picked it up and began reading. I now understand why Ashley (and I) enjoyed this book so much — the story is captivating! This is the story of a wife and mother, Lydia, who owns and operates a bookstore in Acapulco, Mexico. But suddenly, Lydia’s life changed as she experienced a traumatic incident. She finds herself in immediate peril as her husband, mother, and extended family are killed by the local cartel. Since Lydia and her son, Luca, are now in danger, they are forced to flee. So, they set off on a journey of 1,000 miles to make it across the border to the United States undetected. During this journey, they meet others like them who are running away from something and seeking safety in the United States.
I knew nothing about any kind of controversy surrounding this book when I read it. What I did know is that it was the subject of many book clubs and that it was a bestseller. Most of the negative reviews centered around one thing: It’s a novel about Mexican migrants written by a woman who identifies as white. Many people argued that she couldn’t speak on the experience of immigrants because Cummings never experienced it herself. Whatever your thoughts are on the story’s subtext and the controversy is none of my business — you’re entitled to your own opinion and beliefs. What is important is that Cummings describes everything with such vivid imagery. It’s like you’re on the journey with Lydia and Luca. I was transported into the story and found it incredibly difficult to put this book down. It was such an incredible read, and I highly recommend it to all of you.
Thank you for tuning in to Matt’s Book of the Month! I look forward to sharing more books with you in the future.

3 Outdoor Halloween Attractions Guaranteed to Spook
GET OUT OF THE (HAUNTED) HOUSE With These 3 Outdoor Halloween Attractions
Haunted Corn Maze Haunted houses are great if you’re trying to experience some jump scares. But if you want to get the haunted house experience in an outdoor setting, you should check out a haunted corn maze. You’ll hear screams coming from all around to help amp up the fear. It’s also a great way to get some exercise! Haunted Hayride So, what if you want the best of both worlds? You may want to feel scared without walking through a maze or using a paintball gun. That’s where haunted hayrides come in. On a haunted hayride,
Halloween is just around the corner. You’ll soon have trick-or-treaters approaching your door requesting a healthy share of candy. Before then, you may want to go out and feel the thrills of the season yourself, but maybe you’re someone who doesn’t enjoy the cramped spaces of haunted houses. You don’t have to step indoors to experience a spooky attraction though. There are plenty of outdoor Halloween attractions to check out, and below are three of the most thrilling. Zombie Paintball We’ve all watched a scary movie and thought we could do better than some of the characters in these extreme situations. Now
is your chance to prove it. There are zombie paintball courses throughout the country, and they can be a great time for everyone involved. You’ll step aboard a bus or trailer outfitted with paintball guns and proceed along a course full of zombies and creatures. Before long, your friends and family will get into the competitive spirit to see who can hit the most targets.
you’ll hop aboard a platform that’s being towed by a tractor or truck as they take you through a dark forest and possibly some barns. Performers will be woven throughout to provide scares at the perfect moments. It’s a great way to get the classic Halloween experience without having to walk through a house or maze.
