NOVEMBER 2024 | VOLUME 5 | EDITION4
Full disclosure...I can’t quite recall why I included this picture in the newsletter. I typically start assembling these newsletters months ahead of time, so I suppose when I designed the cover for November, the excitement of football season was at the forefront of my thoughts since it's one of my favorite times of the year. While I could have changed it, the image served as a reminder that, although our stadiums may not be as grand, our campuses undeniably provide a fantastic space for our communities to come together...and they certainly do. If you haven't attended a home football game for your school, I highly recommend it. You'll not only witness a large gathering of students and their families, but also community members enjoying the game. We are truly fortunate to have a District with schools that are distinctive, steeped in tradition, and backed by incredible communities. Thanks to the support of our communities and numerous individuals, this year we proudly celebrate 20 years of Foresthill High School, 65 years of Colfax and Del Oro High Schools, and 127 years of Placer High School! Community | Support | Progress Progress is made when we never stop striving to do things better, improve, and build upon the foundation that has been established. Our District continues to do so which is evidenced by the great work being done by our students and staff.

Streetscape History and Art Advisory Committee
The City of Auburn provides amazing opportunities to honor and celebrate many of the individuals who have made a positive and significant impact on the Auburn Community. The Auburn Streetscape Project is one of those opportunities and we are so excited to see the placement of a tile for Dr. John F. Engle who served as Placer High School Principal from 1906 to 1936. He was instrumental in establishing academic programs, athletics and the expansion of the buildings seen on campus today. He also established “Placer” College...now known as Sierra College.
Dr. Engle’s tile will be placed in the area in front of Tango’s Frozen Yogurt in November. Be sure to stop by and check it out!
DR. JOHN F. ENGLE “Dr. John Engle became principal of Placer High School in 1906 and began a long and illustrious 30-year career during which the school grew from a student body of 100 students in one old wooden building to more than 800 pupils in five buildings.”

CBE IN CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGES!
Since 2021, a cohort of Community Colleges throughout California have been collaborating to develop their own Direct Assessment - Competency-Based Education (DA CBE) Associate Degree Programs. The screenshot to the right shows the eight pilot colleges and the programs they are designing using DA CBE. “ As a multi-year initiative, these colleges came together to establish local structures as well as inform statewide policies and regulations to support the systemwide development and implementation (emphasis added) of DA CBE .” PUHSD is leading the way...having made the shift to Competency-Based Education in our high schools enables our students to have a solid understanding of the learning and assessment tools to utilize after high school. These CBE programs are continually evolving throughout the State and the Nation, expanding not only in Community Colleges but also within four-year institutions.

RESOURCES PUHSD and school websites have a dedicated page about CBE which contains a lot of information and resources. PUHSD Webpage Please be sure to listen to all of the podcasts, but especially the episodes that contain information about CBE. PUHSD’s “Placer School for Adults” (PSA) provides incredible courses, services, and programs for our community. Here’s a message from PSA’s new Principal, Steven Casperite, as an update on the start of the school year at PSA: Episode #5 ~ Homecoming & 20-Year Celebration @ FHS Episode #6 ~ Career Technical Education (CTE) @ CHS Episode #7 ~ Wellness Centers
Our classes began at the end of July and the beginning of August, with the full range of classes starting the week of August 12th. We have a diverse student body that is learning English and working towards high school diplomas or equivalency (GED). A few of our Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs include truck driving, AI for home and the workplace, the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) program, and the entrepreneurship/start-your-own business program ~ in addition to many others.
Our Inmate Education Programs are also at capacity, and this year, we will be offering basic electrical training, truck driving, and a Sierra College class along with our other academic programs. We have expanded our programming to meet the needs of Nevada County and the Tahoe- Truckee region with a new administrator, staff, and teachers. Additionally, our Nevada County Corrections Education Program saw its first GED completer of this school year graduate on August 14th!!
Haley Hull Lastly, one of our outstanding students, Haley Hull, received the ACSA Region Two “Every Student Succeeding” Award and will be represented at the State conference in San Diego this November, where Governor Gavin Newsom's wife will be in attendance. Haley also has a wonderful YouTube video produced by ACSA, which you can access through this link: There are MANY success stories in our PSA programs and we couldn’t be more proud of the work done by these incredibly dedicated students and the amazing staff members who encourage and guide them. In addition to Principal Casperite, we welcome two new administrators to PSA.

As Mr. Casperite mentioned, we have expanded our programming to meet the needs of Nevada County and the Tahoe-Truckee region with new staff and courses being taught on campuses in those areas. Starting from the academic year 2024-25, PSA will join hands with the Nevada Joint Union High School District and The Tahoe Truckee Union High School District to provide classes and programs to Nevada County and the Tahoe Truckee region. This expansion means that the same high-quality education for adults, which includes high school diploma, GED, ESL, and Career Technical Education classes that we have provided in Auburn and Western Placer County, will now be accessible at these new locations.

BUDGETS & ATTENDANCE Finding ways to capture lost funding and reduce expenditures was a consistent conversation during Budget Advisory Committee meetings. As we looked at the data, we realized that the District is losing approximately $200,000 in revenue from students missing the two school days prior to Thanksgiving Day. To recapture that loss, we have amended our Academic Calendars for the next two school years to have the entire Thanksgiving week off and start the school year two days earlier. Also, during July 2025 and July 2026, the District is considering having a “dark week” where all facilities will be closed to staff, students, and communities. This will help reduce costs during non-school days of our facilities. The two calendars are below and here are links to the calendars in ‘grid’ form: 25/26 & 26/27
