I MISS MY OLD PAPER DAY-TIMER Late October 2024
I miss my old paper day-timer. Just flip the page open to the desired day or month and jot in the appointment or note. Later, flip back to the page you want to review and see the entire day, week, or month at a glance. Quick and easy. Perhaps it was a bit more cumbersome to carry the binder everywhere throughout the day, but it was handy for carrying lots of other bits and pieces of paper and things. This worked when it was just me, myself, and I as a solo agent. Growth brings change. Coordinating calendars with multiple staff members, sharing files between computers, and growing online interaction between calendars, email, and other documents have necessitated moving exclusively to electronic calendars. There are advantages. Through my cellphone, I can be anywhere and add calendar items that everyone sees. Staff members are able to sync appointments to my calendar. Team members can invite each other to appointments with the click of a mouse. We are able to exchange important bits of information via onscreen chats. Coordinating activities across offices is essential. Adding an appointment on a paper day-timer was simply writing it into the appropriate space. Adding an appointment in Outlook is a multistep process, taking longer but ultimately more functional. Paper was faster in the moment, but ultimately, its limitations were too great. The increase in productivity and decrease in frustration using electronic tools is immense.
But I still miss my paper day-timer.
The Ojai Valley Chamber of Commerce, of which LTIA is a proud member, has recently published a paper, yes, paper map for visitors to the Valley to find local attractions. In the face of Google Maps, and while the Chamber maintains the WhenInOjai.com website, they have published an extremely well-received paper map. Even in this day and age of Google Maps, to find any place your heart desires, a paper map still has a place. Google Maps lets you find a specific location or the types of things you may be looking for, say, restaurants, but on a small phone screen, it still cannot give you a simple overview of an area with all businesses listed. For those readers familiar with the Ojai Valley, you can appreciate that this throwback paper map lists by name and position on the map, every business not only in the downtown but also Mira Monte, Meiners Oaks, and Oak View. For Lyn’s Ledger readers in Indiana, Tennessee, Texas, and several other states unfamiliar with the areas of the Ojai Valley, I suspect that enterprising folks in your area have discovered a niche for paper maps to help visitors find the shops and restaurants in your area as well. Electronic devices continue to force changes into our daily lives, but the last time I checked, Post-it sticky notes were selling quite well.
Here at Lyndon Thomas Insurance Agency, we appreciate each and every one of our clients. Thank you for the opportunity to assist you with your Medicare plan needs.

Hidden Health Risks in Your Neighborhood
HOW YOUR ENVIRONMENT SHAPES YOUR WELL-BEING
The Dangers of ‘Food Deserts’ Now, let’s talk about food. If your neighborhood has limited access to fresh produce and healthy food options, you might be living in what’s known as a food desert. Research shows that people in food deserts are at a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Our environment influences our health, including the availability of nutritious food. So, having a
Have you ever wondered if your neighborhood might be impacting your health? According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, where you live can significantly influence your risk of developing heart disease and stroke. Let’s examine how your surroundings might play a more significant role in your well-being than you think! Nature’s Medicine — Green Spaces Imagine waking up and taking a stroll through a lush park. Sounds nice, right? Well, it turns out that having green spaces nearby is more than just pleasant — it’s good for your health! Dr. Sarju Ganatra from Beth Israel Lahey Hospital in Massachusetts shared with AARP that exposure to green spaces is linked to lower stress levels, better moods, and improved overall well-being. Parks also promote social interaction and community bonding, which are great for your emotional health!
farmers market or a store with fresh produce nearby can make a huge difference. Steppin’ Up and Out Well-constructed and maintained sidewalks encourage walking, which is essential for maintaining heart health and overall fitness. A safe and walkable neighborhood can significantly impact your daily exercise routine. If your sidewalks are in bad shape, staying active and getting your steps in is harder, so reach out to local leaders or groups to advocate for their repair. Next time you step outside, take a moment to consider your surroundings. Does your neighborhood have plenty of green spaces, easy access to fresh food, and good walkability? These factors might seem small, but they significantly affect your health. Your neighborhood is more than just where you live — it’s vital to your overall well-being.

The City of Brotherly Love never ceases to amaze us. In 2022, Alexander Tominsky perhaps didn’t expect just how much his city would support him, but Philadelphia did not disappoint. Tominsky, aka The Chicken Man, posted a flyer stating, “COME WATCH ME EAT AN ENTIRE ROTISSERIE CHICKEN,” along with a modest photo collage of him eating the bird. The “official” event description was equally straightforward: “November 6th will be the 40th consecutive day that I have eaten an entire rotisserie chicken 12 o’clock noon The chicken will be consumed on that abandoned pier near Walmart This is not a party.” A bit odd for sure, but everyone has the right to eat 40 rotisserie chickens and celebrate said poultry at an abandoned pier. Little did The Chicken Man know that this flyer would become a viral sensation, and a crowd would show up PHILLY’S PECK-ULIAR CELEBRATION A Crowd Shows Up to The Chicken Man’s 40-Day Rotisserie Romp
PUMPKIN PIE FRENCH TOAST
to the abandoned pier on Nov. 6 to cheer him on. Despite people being unsure whether the said rotisserie chicken event was, in fact, real, Philadelphia showed up. And they enthusiastically cheered Tominsky on as he consumed his 40th rotisserie chicken. The uproar only intensified when he triumphantly finished the chicken, standing up and putting his fist in the air (reminiscent of the film hero Rocky Balboa). To make the scene even more iconic, Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia” played in the background amid the poultry celebration.
Ingredients
• 1 1/2 tsp vegetable oil, or as needed • 1/2 cup half-and-half • 1/4 cup canned pumpkin purée • 3 large eggs • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
• 1 tsp vanilla extract • 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice • 1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts • 8 slices day-old bread • Maple syrup, to taste
Directions
The lesson here? We’re not entirely sure — American gluttony? Fifteen minutes of fame? — but it does prove the power of community, especially in Philadelphia. Many in the crowd weren’t sure that said chicken consumption would occur or perhaps questioned why an abandoned pier was the locale of choice. At the end of his binge-eating extravaganza, Tominsky expressed his gratitude for the people who showed up, saying, “Thanks for watching me consume.” Be sure to keep an eye out for The Chicken Man because you never know when he’ll make a rotisserie return.
1. Lightly oil a skillet and heat over medium heat. 2. Whisk half-and-half, pumpkin purée, eggs, cinnamon, vanilla, and pumpkin pie spice together in a bowl. Stir in walnuts until evenly distributed. 3. Place 1 slice of bread in the bowl and let it soak briefly to coat both sides. Lift bread to let excess liquid drip back into the bowl, then transfer to the hot skillet. 4. Cook for 2–3 minutes or until golden brown, then flip and cook the other side until done. 5. Stir batter to redistribute walnuts and repeat with other slices of bread, cooking in several batches if necessary. 6. Serve warm with maple syrup.

Superfoods for More Radiant Skin
People have employed lasers, chemical peels, injections, and facelifts in the war against aging skin. While these more extreme measures can be temporarily effective, they can be hard on the wallet and much more cumbersome than natural remedies. Another tool in our arsenal against the effects of aging is our diet. Since our skin ages more like milk than wine, it only makes sense that we eat more fruit (as well as herbs and vegetables). Here are four skin care superfoods that can boost skin health!
antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that help improve the texture and radiance of your skin. I guess it’s time to give in to the dark side!
Kale It won’t kill you to eat kale. In fact, kale is one of the most nutritious foods out there! Best of all, it is full of antioxidants and vitamins to make your body’s biggest organ (your skin) look new again! If you have an aversion to eating greens, you should know that kale also comes in purple varieties.
Blueberries One key ingredient to healthy skin is antioxidants, which help protect skin cells from aging and can even help minimize wrinkles. Fortunately, blueberries are full of antioxidants, such as anthocyanins and flavonoids. They also contain a healthy amount of vitamin C, which has been proven to improve skin firmness. Dark Chocolate Who knew delicious desserts could contribute to healthier skin? Unlike milk chocolate, dark chocolate contains
Thyme Everyone has heard of herbal remedies, and one herb in particular
has some proven benefits for rejuvenating skin. According
