This rule isn’t just a plea from the community; it’s the law, and it comes with consequences that, if broken, go far beyond fines. “Those few minutes of impatience can have catastrophic consequences for the driver and that child’s family forever,” says Lauren, adding that the committee’s next push will be to have bus arm cameras installed on school buses. “No Excuses” Campaign Sends a Message No excuses. Make the stop. Save a life. That’s the message from the “No Excuses” campaign that a parent-led Bus Safety Committee launched on December 1, 2025. According to the campaign’s press release, “the message is clear: No excuses. It’s the law to stop from both directions when kids are getting on or off a school bus.” “This campaign is about accountability,” said Andrea Jones, committee chair. “We all share the road and the responsibility to keep children safe. When those red lights flash, you stop. There are no excuses.” The committee, spearheaded by parents at Our Lady of Lourdes (OLOL) school in Delaware, Ontario, is a collaboration with the Delaware and Middlesex community, local partners, law enforcement, and educational organizations, to address growing concerns about driver behaviour around school buses and the risks to children. “We see drivers who are distracted, don’t know the law, or simply don’t care. In 2023, the Province of Ontario estimated that there were 30,000 illegal ‘drive-bys’ per day in Ontario,” Lauren Preston, a committee member, explains. The Bus Safety Committee’s goal is to raise awareness and encourage safer driving habits. Many local partners and community members collaborated to develop public awareness tools that individuals and organizations can use to spread the message as widely as possible. These tools include content for social media graphics, print ads, lawn signs, and soon, rink boards and billboards that
