Literally Fun Literacy Academy… Successfully proving to be breaking through barriers for children with literacy disabilities by Gloria Rae Krista Dobsinai became a Dyslexia Interventionist for one reason only – her dyslexic child (she ended up having two). Another mother in a comparable situation pointed Krista toward the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA) and OGA training. For two years, Krista went to her daughter’s school four times a week to work with her daughter. By the end of Grade four, her daughter was reading on grade level. It took a few more years to improve daughter’s writing. Following this success, Krista was approached by numerous parents afterwards to work with their children. That is when she knew that she had to go forward and continue this critical work. Krista went on to complete a 40-hour OGA foundations course, a 40-hour associate-level OGA training, and a 100- hour supervised associate practicum. She then earned her Master’s degree in reading science with a focus on dyslexia, which also led to a Dyslexia Certification from the IDA (International Dyslexia Association). She has also trained with three orthographic linguists to gain a deep understanding of the English language, taken courses on linguistics, executive function, ADHD and other challenging behaviours, mindfulness training and attachment theory from the Neufeld Institute. Reading Sciences is a broad field, and much is known about how best to teach most students how to read. Krista learned very quickly that a student is only 50% literate if all she does
is remediate her reading. only the reading, so in her literacy remediation clinic, she also remediates her students’ writing. Krista’s clinic, Literally Fun Literacy, focuses on developing the reading and writing skills of anyone from three to adulthood who struggles to read and write, whether or not they have an official diagnosis. Each student has their own individual learning profile ranging
Is your vehicle safe to drive in winter weather? Winter brings snow and ice, which can be dangerous for your vehicle. Older and poorly maintained vehicles are at a higher risk of slipping and sliding on icy roads. If your brakes aren’t in good condition, or your tires don’t have good tread, you increase the risk of skidding out on an icy road. The most important thing to understand about reading acquisition is that there is no significant correlation between reading abilities or disabilities and intelligence. Literally Fun Literacy is located at 1615 North Routledge Park, Unit 3. Learn more at literallyfunliteracy.ca. from a combination of dyslexia, deficits in reading and/or writing, ADHD, AuDHD, Mild Intellectual Disability, and various speech challenges and/or any combination of these. Krista completes a thorough skills assessment using the Acadience Reading System (having completed training on the Acadience Assessment and Comprehensive Fluency and Oral Language Assessment). Regardless of the learning disability, the recommended mode of remediation is direct, explicit, systematic instruction. This is often known as “Structured Literacy.”

appreciate the many Hyde Park and Oakridge residents who always ask how they can help. Thank you for your community leadership, your kindness and your commitment to making London better. Here’s to a hopeful and connected start to 2026. Mayor Josh Morgan
Happy New Year, Hyde Park and Oakridge! As we turn the page to 2026, I want to offer my sincere thanks for all you contributed to our city last year. From festive events to local improvement ini- tiatives, your neighbourhoods set the standard for community energy and involvement in London.
Winter has made a bold entrance this year with snow arriving early and temperatures dipping lower than usual for January. I know it’s been felt along our busy corridors and throughout residential streets. Our City crews are working hard to stay ahead of the weather, keeping major routes safe and responding quickly to neighbourhood needs. This time of year also brings heightened focus on supporting our most vulnerable residents. London’s warming centres, outreach teams and shelter partners are operating extended winter programs to ensure no one is left out in the cold. These services are an important part of our winter response, and I

Tom Delaney – Distingished Londoner Tom Delaney has been named a Dis- tinguished Londoner for the 2026 Ma- yor’s New Year’s Honour List. The list recognizes outstanding members of the London community whose dedi- cation and service have made a meaningful difference in the city.
“Tom is at-the-ready to lead, champion and pitch in wherever he can,” states the City of London press release re- garding. “A business leader (General Manager at Oxford Dodge) known for
his ethical and compassionate approach to management, Tom applies this same leadership to the community. He’s the Chair of the Hyde Park Business Improvement Association, and an active member of the organizing committee for the Hyde Park Santa Claus Parade. His positive approach is infectious and his quiet leadership is centered around bringing out the best in the team he leads and the volunteers he works with. Live Staking on Medway Creek by UTRCA
In November, the Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) led live staking projects at two locations along Medway Creek. Despite the almost foot of snow, students from Medway High School and volunteers from the Thames River Anglers were able to get all of the live stakes into the ground! Using live stakes cut from willow trees, volunteers and UTRCA staff hammered them into the shore of the Medway Creek in areas of high erosion. Live staking involves cutting stems or branches from native trees and shrubs, sharpening them into stakes, and hammering them into the streambank. The stakes stabilize the banks, reducing erosion, creating habitat for native species, cool the water (through shading), and reduce the impacts of flooding.

Hidden Talents – Nippy Watson You may know Nippy Watson as Villager Publication’s friendly delivery ambassador – or as a music DJ, popular at Retirement and Nursing homes, weddings, stag and doe parties and other events. Nippy comes by his interest in music naturally. He hails from a musical family. His Dad had a band. He is also a nutrition coach – and tells us how he first became interested in that. “When I was having major heart issues in my early 50s,” he reflects, “with surgery being suggested to correct my health challenges, I was introduced to nutritional supplements by a friend who strongly argued about how effective their results would be. I stayed on them and soon my cardiologist was saying that there would be no need for the surgery. I became a believer and set out to learn more about nutrition and supplements – and which were best for specific conditions.” Nippy studied with Unicity International, a global company with a presence in 60 countries, at their Toronto location. “I completed my certification in 2017, but continue to study because of the constant changes and new findings taking place in the healthcare field,” he says. He is most frequently asked for advice on pain management, diabetes, cholesterol balances and high blood pressure. “Not all supplements work the same for everyone,” he says, “so that’s where a trained coach helps.” Nippy is usually available for nutritional consultations from 9 am until 9 pm at (519) 488-4839. For DJ inquiries, call him at (519) 489-4837. “Do leave your name and number for a return call.”
“I am a product of the products,” says Nippy. He attributes his stamina for activities such as long-distance motorcycle cruising to his good health management. “Harley Davidsons are extremely heavy bikes,” he smiles.

During the pandemic, the personal savings rate shot up, hitting a record of 28.2% from April to June according to Statistic Canada during the pandemic. It fell over the next several months, but still remained about twice as high as the rate of the past few years. Of course, much of this surge in Canadians proclivity to save money was due to our lack of options for spending it, as the coronavirus caused either complete or partial shutdowns in physical retail establishments, as well as dining and entertainment venues. But if you did manage to boost your own personal savings when your spending was constrained, is it possible to remain a good saver when restrictions are lifted? Probably. And the greater your savings, the greater your financial freedoms – including the freedom to invest and freedom from excessive debt. When we reach a post-pandemic world, see if you can continue saving more than you did in previous years – and use your savings wisely. These aren’t the only financial resolutions you can make – but following them may help you develop habits that could benefit you in 2021 and beyond. Time for a Fresh Financial Start It’s time to make a fresh start – and one way to do that is to make some New Year’s resolutions. Of course, you can make these resolutions for all parts of your life – physical, emotional, intellectual – but have you ever considered some financial resolutions? Here are a few such resolutions to consider: Don’t overreact to events When the coronavirus pandemic hit the financial markets took a big hit. Many people, convinced that we were in for a prolonged slump, decided to take a “time out” and headed to the investment sidelines. But it didn’t take long for the markets to rally, rewarding those patient investors who stayed the course. Nothing is a certainty in the investment world, but the events of 2020 followed a familiar historical pattern: major crisis followed by market drop followed by strong recovery. The lesson for investors? Don’t overreact to today’s news – because tomorrow may look quite different. Be prepared At the beginning of 2020, nobody was anticipating a worldwide pandemic and its terrible consequences, both to individuals’ health and to their economic well-being. None of us can foretell the future, either, but we can be prepared, and one way to do so is by building an emergency fund. Ideally, such a fund should be kept in liquid, low-risk vehicles and contain at least In response to pandemic-related economic pressures, some employers cut their matching contributions to employer sponsored plans. Will some future event cause another such reduction? No one knows – and even if it happens, there’s six months’ worth of living expenses. Focus on moves you can control
