Growing up with seven siblings, we didn’t have much, so I learned to make do. My favorite spot was Long Branch Creek, where I’d catch minnows and find earthworms. Using a tree limb, string, and hook, I went fishing—always chasing that “Big Fish”. When you think about it, life and business are a lot the same. You must find ways to make it work. In the cattle business, profits many times depend on your inputs—just like that earthworm and hook mattered for catching fish. Smart choices, like investing in quality bulls, are a must. When I was a kid, a local dairy farmer would buy our best bull every year. I finally asked, “Why do you buy the best bull to produce bottle calves?” His response, “the best bull pays every time, the calves always fetch a premium.” If a better bull pays every time on bottle calves, what does he pay at the stages of improved weaning weights, finish weights, carcass quality, and heifer retention?
