As I write this article, Covid-19 is surging in our county. The state had a record number of deaths a few days ago and the third-highest one-day increase since the start of the pandemic. For the first time, our local hospitals are feeling the results of too many positive cases. It’s scary and heartbreaking. I’m stress eating leftover Halloween candy trying to figure out how to keep staff and patrons safe and the library open. Let me tell you…it’s not pretty. As of now, the Library Board has decided to suspend browsing appointments until at least January 11th. We are hoping this will be enough time for numbers to go down after the holidays. Soon after the New Year, we will reevaluate by looking at the number of cases and how our local hospitals are holding up. You can find the latest updates on resuming browsing appointments on our website and Facebook. I know everyone is tired of 2020. Tired of wearing masks, tired of staying home. And yes, the vaccine makes us feel like there’s light at the end of the tunnel, but this is a very dark, very scary tunnel and that light is still pretty far away. 2021 is going to be more of the same for quite a while. We do have something to be grateful for— despite the virus, we are filling holds, providing great virtual programs, and checking out thousands of ebooks, e-audiobooks, e-magazines, and streaming movies and music. And so far, there is always a staff person just a telephone call or email away ready to help when you need us.

Sincerely, Patty Hector

Children’s Books Spring Stinks by Ryan T. Higgins Jan. 5 Ruth the bunny is excited to share the smelly springtime smells of spring with Bruce! But what will Bruce think of all that stink? Milo Imagines the World by Matt de la Peña Feb. 2

Milo is on a long subway ride with his older sister. To pass the time, he studies the faces around him and makes pictures of their lives. There’s the whiskered man with the crossword puzzle; Milo imagines him playing solitaire in a cluttered apartment full of pets. There’s the wedding-dressed woman with a little dog peeking out of her handbag; Milo imagines her in a grand cathedral ceremony. Tween Books Amari & The Night Brothers by B.B. Alston Jan. 19 Amari Peters has never stopped believing her missing brother, Quinton, is alive. Not even when the police told her otherwise, or when she got in trouble for standing up to bullies who said he was gone for good. So when she finds a ticking briefcase in his closet, containing a nomination for a summer tryout at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, she’s certain the secretive organization holds the key to locating Quinton—if only she can wrap her head around the idea of magicians, fairies, aliens, and other supernatural creatures all being real. Rescue by Jennifer A. Nielson Feb. 2 Six hundred and fifty-seven days ago, Meg Kenyon’s father left their home in France to fight for the Allies in World War II, and that was the last time Meg saw him. Recently, she heard he was being held prisoner by the Nazis, a terrible sentence from which Meg fears he’ll never return. All she has left of him are the codes he placed in a jar for her to decipher, an affectionate game the two of them shared. But the codes are running low, and soon there’ll be nothing left of Papa for Meg to hold on to at all. Teen Books A Court of Silver Flames - A Court of Thorns and Roses Book 4 by Sarah J. Maas Feb. 16 Nesta Archeron has always been prickly-proud, swift to anger, and slow to forgive. And ever since being forced into the Cauldron and becoming High Fae against her will, she’s struggled to find a place for herself within the strange, deadly world she inhabits. Worse, she can’t seem to move past the horrors of the war with Hybern and all she lost in it. The Box in the Woods - Truly Devious Book 4 by Maureen Johnson June 15 Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell needs a good murder. After catching a killer at her high school, she’s back at home for a normal (that means boring) summer. But then she gets a message from the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly known as Camp Wonder Falls—the site of the notorious unsolved case, the Box in the Woods Murders. The new owner offers Stevie an invitation: Come to the camp and help him work on a true crime podcast about the case. Adult Books The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah Feb. 2 Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops are failing, the water is drying up, and dust threatens to bury them all. One of the darkest periods of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl era, has arrived with a vengeance. In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli―like so many of her neighbors―must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. Waiting for the Night Sky by Julie Carrick Dalton Jan. 12 Cadie Kessler has spent decades trying to cover up one truth. One moment. But deep down, didn’t she always know her secret would surface? An urgent message from her long-estranged best friend Daniela Garcia brings Cadie, now a forestry researcher, back to her childhood home. There, Cadie and Daniela are forced to face a dark secret that ended both their idyllic childhood bond and the magical summer that takes up more space in Cadie’s memory then all her other years combined.
